M3 and M Sport Steering Wheels - differences?

I would like to replace the steering wheel trim (the soft touch plastic piece that covers the three spokes of the wheel and contains the multifunction button panels - see below).

Does anyone know if the piece for the M3 wheel will work with the M Sport wheel in the E82?

Parts catalogue says not compatible, and at the same time, I can't help but feel they're a nearly identical part in every way that matters (e.g. mounting points and dimensions) - the only difference being aesthetic.

*Note, no paddle shifters.

Thanks!

Part in question:

They are essentially the same. The M3 has nicer leather and potentially different buttons but other than that they are the same thing.

Not applicable to you but the paddles are different and not cross compatible, even with a DCT 135.

Thx!

Yep, so I went ahead and ordered that trim piece.
I'm 99.9999% positive there are no material differences that will prevent me from using it on my m-sport steering wheel.

Believe it's just the small divot near the "M" badge that is the only difference.

Point being - this is $125 on ebay for a new genuine BMW piece, and $255 at the dealer.
