Next set of rubber i will bump up the width front and back. Although i'm thinking of adding a 3mm spacer at the front right now.
The M240i has 225/40 R18 and 245/35 R18 from the factory, though.

Hi,

Looking to run a 17x9 255/40 setup on a race car. When you say you have a ton of strut clearance, do you mean up front? Could you get by with less of a spacer?

Basically at fender lips all around, this is an aggressive fitment only possible with fender modifications. Looking from below I have a TON of strut clearance though. Might lower the car slightly

In front, yes. I think the TCK's I run are on the thinner side of strut tubes (unlike KWs or Ohlins). I might try a 5mm spacer instead to alleviate fender rub. I will have to double check, but you can definitely go higher than ET32.

Hey Everyone,

What is your take on a square setup 18x8 ET 35 for a daily? From the research I have done it will fit on stock suspension and will allow for rotating tires due to the square setup. Do you think the loss of width in the front and rear is worth having the ability to rotate? Will this setup need spacers to sit flush with the fender?

What width tires are you wanting to use? And what is your driving style?

If you don't floor it very often or take turns quickly then you probably won't notice the thinner tires. If you do drive spiritedly, I'd advise against going any smaller than the stock 245 in the rear

Fitting a 255 and a 9" wide front wheel is tough on a 1 Series - details down to the exact tire you choose are relevant.

Here is Vorshlag's test fit of a 17x9 +36 (+41 with a 5mm spacer) with a narrow 255 and it appears to fit just fine:

On the other hand, my 17x9 +35 with a 255 RE71R which is a MUCH wider tire is an extremely tight fit and rubs over bumps. I have Ohlins coilovers and with that wide tire, there is no way that a +42 would not rub the strut. Maybe with a smaller tire it wouldn't, but with my RE71R, it definitely would.

I definitely don't want anything smaller than stock. 245-255 in the rear should be fine for me. I do enjoy taking a turn quickly hear and there and accelerating quickly from a stop. However, I tend to drive calmly for the most part. I guess I'm mostly concerned with tire width options at 8' instead of 8.5/9.5.

245 on a ET35 wheel will probably rub in the front unless you roll your fenders. I wouldn't worry too much about the 8" wheel width; you may lose a little bit of transient response but it should be fine for a daily driver

if you have 225s all around,it should fit. i can't see why it wouldn't fit.

still,it's going to be hella flush or borderline mexi-poke,if anything.

So I guess the ultimate question is then is it worth going down to 225's all around? Is the loss in tire width super noticeable? Nice use of the word hella btw.

No rubbing that I've noticed during street driving. Will update after autocross this weekend on how they do when pushed

EDIT: Didn't notice any rubbing during autoX this weekend. The car felt much more neutral with the 245's up front, but I will say that I was disappointed in the overall level of grip from these tires. They're old Conti ExtremeContact DW tires and they felt like they had lower total grip than the stock size RE050A RFT's that I have used in previous events. In the market for a set of good tires (RE71, Rivals, Direzza, etc) and trying to decide whether I should stick with 245's up front or try 235's since high-performance tires tend to run a little wider...

to be honest with you,i wouldn't know the difference in grip. you'd have to ask another member here.

How have you been liking this setup? The wheels I'm looking at are this exact size, and I was gonna run whatever size tire would end up being OEM diameter - I think 225/40R18

I like the setup a lot. The front has just the right amount of poke. Not to far out to be slamming fender but looks more aggressive, wish the rear was out a little more but I’ll get spacers eventually. The car feels better to drive as well!

looked through the whole thread and couldn't find anyone running this. Would it work with the rears rolled and pulled?

19x9.5 et40 255/30
19x8.5 et35 225/35

lowered on h&r coils

Those are doable, but will depend on your tire choice and alignment.

Front will be no problem as long as you have camber plates - I would estimate you will need 2 degrees camber. I ran an 8.5" +35 front with a 225 Conti DWS with my 3.5 degrees camber and had TONS of room.

Rear will require a roll for sure, and probably a pull. I ran a 9.5" +45 with my 255 Conti DWS with rolled (but not pulled at all) fenders and it absolutely did not rub under any circumstances. If you ran the same tire as me (which is quite narrow for a 255), you would be close to getting away with it with just a roll - might need a bit more roll. If you wanted to run a wider 255, you'll need a pull.

Awesome, thanks Mark. Fenders are rolled and pulled already to fit street radials so your response inspires confidence. I think they will fit.

I just picked up some winter tires For my non-sport 128i. A set of kinda ugly mille miglias, 17" diameter, ET 40's with 225/45R-17 blizzacks.

However, I'm not sure if they are 8 or 8.5 width. Will either 8 or 8.5" width clear? seems like it should based on what I've read here, but willtheyfit.com makes it seem like they will be too far out with the 8.5.

opinions?

Just had my 08 135i lowered on AP coilovers (not overly stiff)

Running a 245/40/18 on the OEM 8.5+52 wheels

Had 18mm spacers which rubbed quite a bit, before I change to some thinner spacers would going to a shorter tyre (245/35) provide any extra clearance?
