You forgot about the BMW Performance exhaust. Oh, that's right, you're worried about drone.

As I've said before, drone is easily controlled (for me) by not letting the RPMs dip too low while cruising.

There are other aftermarket exhausts available for our cars than the PE, as you already know, that you might like better.

Strangely satisfying weekend. Tore down, diagnosed, and repaired a screeching idler pulley in the clothes dryer (thank you, Amazon Prime same day delivery) on Saturday, and still had time to lazily tidy up the DD.

Why do that when the PE comes with the y-pipe/resonator delete in the box? You get the complete package!

Yeah, I understand if you want to save some money, just remove your car's resonator to add some volume, but it's not going to sound the same as the PE with the y-pipe.

Better tone (PE) and more volume (y-pipe). Win-win!

Valve cover replacement: done!

What an absolute PITA...so many connectors, plastic clips, and various other junk to get out of the way. It took me three hours just to begin undoing the bolts in the first place. After that, it was about 2 hours to clean up the mating surfaces and bolt everything together again.

I posted pictures above of my valve train, which looks incredibly clean for having 182k miles on it. No 'deep golden' color, no carbon deposits, and no sludge. I'm impressed, and have more confidence to keep pushing the car, knowing that (at first glance) the engine is solid.

Along with the valve cover, I replaced the spark plugs since I was in there and I'm fast approaching 200k miles. The gaps were HUMUNGOUS lol. Fresh Denso Iridium Power plugs, and now the thing really, truly hauls a$$. It pulls really hard, all the way to redline, and does so as smoothly as an Inline-6 should. It also idles smoother and lower, and has far better throttle response.

I also ended-up putting the cowl back in the car, the car would fog-up the windows with the A/C off at a stop light, and the bad mechanical sounds were wearing on me (injectors, P.S. pump, DISA flaps engaging, etc.).

Yeah, my point was just that using the performance muffler w/o the y-pipe (or just doing the muffler mod) is a nice in-between that’s louder than stock w/o any drone to speak of. Lots of people are still bothered by the drone of the full PE on the N55 (including original 135is reviewers,) and some here, like 1SerieStud, installed the PE on their N55 cars and then went back and put the resonator back on for a better balance.

It’s just a loud, louder, loudest situation. I’m personally just going to do the muffler mod, because I’m sensitive to drone, and I prefer the black tips. A guy at the track a few months ago was actually convinced my exhaust wasn’t stock after hearing it and seeing the black tips. The N55 is a good sounding engine in most guises.

I've read most of the threads here (at least twice) and many different people have many different opinions.

Exhaust sound likes and dislikes are all pretty subjective, so whatever floats your boat.

PS - personally, never liked the stock black tips, but it seems that a lot of people like them, so what do I know. lol

I'm currently driving around with an e90 M3 nappa leather steering wheel; having replaced my M-Sport one which was cracked and decayed:



... But despite popular opinion, I don't rate the M3 wheel. It's smooth and it gets slippery at the slightest provocation - a small amount of sunscreen or sweat on your hands and it affects your driving.

So, I thought I'd try something different to restore my original M-sport one.

I know there are alcantera wrap kits, but from what I've seen on eBay, it's very hard to get a good result. I was tempted to find a flat-bottomed m-sport wheel, but really I can't justify $400+ for one.

With a bit of patience and some carbon fibre wrap; I've covered the imperfections and added a racing stripe.

It's not perfect, it was my first CF wrap project and it was a bit challenging at the back; but it's $550 cheaper than the M3 wheel and in my opinion, feels better when driving.

So, I'll be putting it back on the car soon and my M3 wheel will be up for sale.

Looks daunting but really it wasn't/isn't. A bunch of those are for lights. Fog lights are missing, housing and all. Rear lights are LED's and not CAN friendly. O2's are because of massive exhaust leaks ... had DP's and I'm thinking the gaskets fell out and PO didn't notice, stuck to factory maybe; have to dig into it further.

Drivers window would only go down inch per button push. Reset that and it's good now.


Big one is the steering angle sensor is not reading at all. I figure that's a clockspring issue? I didn't actually check any of the wheel buttons, should have.

But body is clean, it runs and drives. Just needs some love and care. I'll have to go back and do some more digging and code out all the light errors for him later on.

Ordered yet another 4 RSFBs, apparently i did not pay attention to the painted dots on the bushings and made sure they faced forwards of the car and just installed them. Also did not make sure that they were concentric to the bolt holes, i just pressed out the old and pressed in the new bushings.

I will disconnect the driveshaft to diff, try to lower the SF even furthur for more space to access the front bushings and the rear sway bar. Hopefully things will go perfectly this time around.

My WL RSFB inserts went in at ~76,500 miles, and there was significant improvement in feel. They've been in for just over 5,000 miles now and still feel much better than pre insert. My back end was wandering around like crazy without the inserts, and is much more in control with them. Don't get me wrong, it still wanders around, but at least it's polite about it now.

For a direct comparison it would be pretty quick to remove them again...

No reason for /me/ to remove them & test for effect- I know they work and I'm happy with the results.

However there seem to be several not overly pleased with the inserts who could do a comparison...

While I'm at it, the actual point I failed to detail was agreement with the theory that mileage makes a difference to the perceived results. Mine were clearly old & squishy, not they're not as squishy...

Yeah, from what I've gathered reading zillions of threads and watching videos, the sound is more or less the same, so it's just a matter of how loud one wants vs. the amount of drone.
