Guys - and forgive me if this is/has been discussed... but...
Back in 2014, I sent my dealer a picture of the battery
P/N says
S: 61 21 6 917 884
AW: 61 21 6 924 020

The parts guy said "Not an AGM battery"

What say you? Is it an AGM or not?

Hey Doug, did you ever get an answer on this? Thanks

If anyone is still shopping for batteries, Pep Boys (online) has a promotion for 25% off. I picked up a Bosch S6 AGM battery for $164.99 (+$15 core charge, which you will obviously get back if you return your old battery to a local store). I don't have a Pep Boys close to me, so I ate the cost, and ended up spending $179.99. Still not bad for the top-of-the line AGM battery from Bosch, IMO.

As mentioned, the battery needs coding AND registration (these are two separate things). The coding is to tell the car the type of battery (flooded or AGM) and the amperage. Registering the battery simply tells the car that the battery is new, so that the Intelligent Battery Sensor can correctly charge the battery, monitor temperature, etc. Parameters change with the age of the battery.

Am I correct in assuming that Carly will both code and register?

I did not. I was just thinking about this as I hooked my Ctek up to the 1M yesterday in standard mode....

I think so. I mean, I always hear people talking about Carly for registering the battery and I assume it does the coding, too, otherwise what's the point. Maybe a Carly user can chime in?

I was going to use Carly, but I felt like they were nickle-and-diming me. I bought the dongle for $78, and then was about to but the app ($45) when I realized that battery registration could only be enabled by an in-app purchase (+$10). So I just returned the dongle and used NCSExpert to do the coding, and registered the battery with Toolset32, both of which I already had.

If you haven't done any coding and don't have the software I just mentioned, Carly is probably a safer bet. I imagine it's probably more intuitive to use, too. But for me it was kind of superfluous.

I always charge using the AGM mode on the CTEK. (FWIW.)

I have the same battery and it says AGM right on it.

Sorry for the bad picture. You can see the P/N that matches the one you gave and 'AGM' at the bottom.

I'm not sure if this will work for everyone in the U.S. (it might depend on your region), but Advance Auto Parts is selling an exact match of our OEM battery (same specs - 70Ah | 760 CCA | AGM) for $126.99 before core charge and sales tax.

The battery is $176.99 and there's a 30% discount (max $50) if you use the code HXE3BX when you check out. This code is for online purchases shipped to your home, but the code still worked when I selected in-store pickup.

If that code doesn't work, Advance usually has a discount code you can use. Try PS20 for 20% off, for example.

The battery in the online description is grey, but when I picked it up it was actually black. Here's a link to the item. The full URL in case you need it is shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/autocraft-platinum-agm-battery-group-size-h6-760-cca-h6-agm/10210829-P?navigationPath=L1*14920%7CL2*15000%7CL3*15597

Here's a picture of the battery; I also noticed it was made in Germany:

I've seen 9/30/2011 and 10/1/2011. The VIN sticker on the inside of the driver side door says '10/11' and when I put in the last seven of the VIN into realoem, it returns a build date of 9/2011.

To follow up on ///BYU’s post above:
1. Started getting intermittent yellow battery sign on dashboard (e.g. waiting in line at gas station with ignition off listening to radio)
-Car cranks fine in spite of this. 31k miles, 9/2011 manufacture date, original battery.
2. Car/battery is put on CTEK tender weekly for a few days at a time.
3. Advance auto parts had cheapest battery after coupon code. Online prices run between $180-220 (pepboys, autozone, o’reilly’s, Sears, batteries plus, etc) Sam’s Club actually had one for ~$145. Costco doesn’t have correct type. AAP ended being $189.99 - 25% discount code, which is not as good as what ///BYU got last year.

The worst part was dealing with the metal retaining on both sides of the battery at the bottom of the well in the trunk. I recommend removing the one on the left (driver’s side, adjacent to the (+) terminal) and sliding the lip of the battery under the loosened clip on the right (passenger side, next to (-) terminal) - can keep that one raised enough by using a bent coat hanger to lift it until the battery is in place. Then reattach the other clip.

Also: don’t freak out (like I did) when you notice there is a braided blue/red wire that is just dangling unconnected from the IBS loom: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=653177

I was going to buy into the Carly ecosystem but WiFi adapter is $80 + $50 for iOS software which is an ANNUAL subscription fee. Umm, no thanks. I’m going to meet up with a local I found on CL who will register the battery. Coding not needed since specs are identical.

I am in Texas ,my car stumbled when turning on recently.. I went and had a shop check the OEM battery and it is still putting out 700 CCA vs the original 760.

After researching this, I just recently found out that my battery tender is likely the wrong type and that the car should have an AGM battery.

However.. despite the climate, and the fact that my car does remain on the charger a lot.. I just went on a trip to a track (high plains raceway) in Colorado from Texas last weekend and the original battery worked flawlessly...

See my post - you have to look at the battery to know (it will say AGM). Some 1Ms have the AGM battery and some don't - I think the later builds did.

Mine is a later build but dealer replaced under warranty so not sure what came with it but it is not an AGM. So I can confirm some have AGM some don't.

For whatever it worth....I just called my BMW dealership and confirmed that the correct OEM battery replacement is (61-21-2-353-811) and is in fact an AGM Battery.

FYI - this topic came up on another thread but wanted to update this thread as well for anyone needing it in the future

Seconding this. I just had my battery changed at the dealer this weekend and this is the part # they replaced it with. I believe it's a bit of a short change though with only 680 CCA vs original of 760 CCA.
