2009-2011 128i's have a Vanos bolt issue that is no longer under unlimited extended warranty. Ask the previous owner if the Vanos bolts have been replaced otherwise it could lead to an expensive repair. If faulty the car will sound broken (like a diesel).

Can be easily checked when doing the valve cover / valve cover gasket.

I bought mine 128i unseen from another country. Worked out ok!

Jokes aside, very good and useful info here.

Helpful post, thanks. Currently looking for a manual 128i and its not easy to find one that isnt either very low mileage or very high mileage! Curious how far the average engine goes before needing work. I'm coming from M20/30/50s and know they can easily go 400k+.

My review for
2011 bmw 135i n55 e82
bought 2017 39,000 miles

MOST common issues with the 135i N54 & N55 engine (what to look out for):

(N54) Turbo Wastegate Rattle - Sypmtoms include: Rattling noise from front end especially at idle.
N/a

(N54 & N55) High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure
55,000 miles January 2020

(N54 & N55) Electric Water Pump Failure - Symptoms include: Car goes into limp mode, recommended to be replaced at 60k+ miles
70,000 June 2021

(N54) Carbon Buildup/Deposits on Valves - Symptoms include: Rough idle, decreased performance. Walnut blast for fix ($300-$600 depending on shop/location)
N/a

(N54 & N55) Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG) Failure - Symptoms include: Oil leak on front of engine around filter housing, losing oil over time, oil pooling on ground under car or on skid cover. Replace gasket for fix ($300-$900+ depending on shop, DIY possible for mech-inclined individuals)
(N54 & N55) Windshield Washer Tank Leak - Symptoms include: Fluid runs low often, pool of fluid under car after filling tank. (Potential DIY?)
55,000 miles January 2020

Changed oil every 4K miles
Spark plugs and coils at @60k miles
Add mhd super license at 70k turned on burble for 10k miles then off at 80k

Bonus recommendations:
Mandatory buy burger tuning sport oil cooler oil only $60

Former E90 335i owner here - considering an E88.

Anything specific to the convertible top? I’m aware of the roof rubbing TSB, as it’s an ’09.
It’s an N54 too, but that doesn’t scare me…

Additional spark plug interval for PPC-equipped 135i

I realize this thread is ancient, but since it's sticky, I figured I'd chime in. I've read through most of the forum, but honestly it was a light skim read in the last few pages, so if this was mentioned, please forgive me.

My 135i has the BMW Performance Power Kit, and the recommended spark plug interval is 45,000 miles, not 80k like most 135s. It's right there on a sticker on the air intake.

Recall #23V-707 has recently surfaced. Sounds like this may have been reopened and will be covered. I saw this posted elsewhere on the forum and since that bot just bumped this thread I thought I would follow up to blnk's information.
