Interesting wrench options --- 11mm
From Sears:
Do you think any of these would be better than the Hazlet or is 5 degrees too big? I'm thinking 12 point is 360/12 or 30 degrees... would 5 degrees be 6 times better? http://www.sears.com/kd-tools-kdt985...&blockType=G79 http://www.sears.com/gearwrench-8522..._tnt=39869:4:0

Maybe this video will help those who run into bleeding issues when trying to bleed the clutch system.

I just used my standard open ended 11mm wrench. Used the open side since I had the tube sticking out of it. No fancy turns or curves or anything needed. Just give it a few degrees, flip it, give it a few more degrees, etc. Nothing to it. This is a 2011 135i w/ N55 if that matters at all. I suppose a different wrench would be a little quicker but I'd have maybe saved 30 seconds. Maybe I got lucky? For my application, nothing special was needed whatsoever.
No idea on before / after feel. I got it apart, put the new one in, and then realized that the one I pulled out was already modded. Previous owner did it and either forgot to mention it or I forgot that he did. LOL. That would explain why I didn't know why everyone hated the stock clutch! About the bleeding, I can't think of any way to do it "right" that guarantees no air in it. To me, doing it right means bleeding it. Even if you put the ends together slowly and allow a little fluid to come out to minimize the air. I think you can definitely get away without bleeding it, you may not have enough air to cause problems or notice it. But I still wouldn't call that the right way to do it. |

Did this mod tonight on my 2011 135i M-sport. Ran into minor issue with pressure bleeding. Only used air initially, as reservoir "looked full". Wound up bleeding fluid, bubbles, and then air in that specific sequence. Clutch pedal went to the floor without any resistance. Undid the bleeder, filled the reservoir up to the rim, put about a cup of fresh fluid in the bleeder, pumped it up to 20 psi, bled again but with short bursts, until no more bubbles appeared in the clear tubing and catch bottle. Pedal firmed up immediately, and I was good to go.
Wow, this is what a fast clutch engagement feals like - never experienced this in a BMW, and I owned 5 of them before my 135i. I also installed clutch stop. Got to get used to the new dynamics. So little pdeal throw is needed now, and so easy to shift smoothly and promptly in gears 1-2-3. Rev matching is also smoother and easier. As a previous poster mentioned, the standard 11mm wrench and some patience (taking 1/4 turns, and flipping the wrnech) is all you need to crack the bleed valve - no fancy half moon or angled wrench to buy for this task. Great mod, and I highly recommend it. Last edited by dcaron9999; 07-25-2013 at 09:23 PM.. |

I really want to do this, but I've got < 3K miles on the car and if I break it (I'd have it done at an indie) this early somehow I'm going to be really pissed. *torn*

just bought my 2011 135i less than a month ago, and it is still under warranty. With all the great DIY's out there, and especially this one, I felt confident. If you ever tackled a did brake job or brake bleed before, this CDV replacement job is way simpler.

It just came to me, PRESTONE brand!!! I've been mixing it with Motul RBF600 to make it go further for my buck, track tested, Ginger_Extract approved.

Anyone in Chicago that has done this/willing to help me get this done?
Everything seems straight forward except for the bleeding of the clutch...never done that before. |

Question for all those that have done this how smooth is your clutch pedal now? I did this about a week ago and I love the engagement however I feel as if my clutch pedal is not smooth it almost feels like it is rubbing or something I bled the clutch using a motive bleeder but did not have anyone to hold down the pedal. I also noticed the pedal now makes a faint squeaky noise not sure what the deal is.
