New here (Hello!) and have a question about cup holder an Navigation
Current and long time Volkswagen/Audi owner here... I think I'm ready for something new and fresh (1er). I like this site and the very informative posts and DIY's I've seen thus far.
I'm thinking of ordering a 1er upon my Golf R32's lease expiration later this year (2010). I've configured both the 130i and 135i with navigation and that horrid cup holder always shows up mounted onto the passenger side tunnel shaft trim. What gives?? Question: Can that item be deleted if I custom order my car with the navigation unit? I don't want or need this in my car. Picture for reference: Thanks in advance everyone. |

you can simply unplug the cupholder. It is just stuck into a slot on the right of the shifter.
since you will have the iDrive on teh center console the remaining cupholder under the arm rest is completely useless. The location and size of the "horrid" cupholder is actually pretty good and works well for my water bottle. |

As chbj said, it works surprisingly well.
And when not needed, the cupholder stores very nicely in the trunk compartment near the battery. Tom |

Just remove it and send it to me to use as a spare....I love it. It's in the perfect location........
Pic with it removed....

Might not be the nicest setup aesthetically, but functionally it's really the best cup holder location I've had on a car. The 3 series "push release" cup holders are more elegant, but the driver's holder is too far away. Right next to the shifter is perfect. So I give it an A+ for functionality.

I wont put anything in that cup-holder ever since the time I put a drink in there, accelerated hard, looked down saw it tipping over and KNEW I was gonna have a bad day.

There is a thread in the DIY about adding this cup holder to a 1 that does not have navigation. Without the nav, you have one useful cup holder but the one under the arm rest would be a big pain to use. It won't hold anything very tall unless the arm rest is up. And the arm rest would have to come up for even a can or something to go in and out. It is useful to hold a cell phone or wallet or something. If you don't have nav and add the cup holder you do not like, then and only then you have two useful cup holders. I'm actually thinking of adding this cup holder to mine.
If you want nav and are questioning the $2100 option, you might want to check out the portable accessory nav units. They are rebranded garmins and the wide ones (Plus and Pro) can be nicely integrated with the radio during dealer installation. The more expensive Pro model should be about $1000 installed. United has these units on their website last time I looked. Jim

Thank you all for the info. I didn't think that cup holder was even removable. Now I don't think it's as bad looking as it was before lol.
It can't be ordered without the car can it? Even If I factory spec a car????? |

No, if you order a car with navigation, you will also get the cup holder (at least you will in the U.S.). But, as mentioned above, you can remove the cup holder from its slot if you don't want it there.

That must just be in the US. I have navigation and hence only 1 cupholder but I didn't tick the option for the extra cupholder. Think it looks ugly and I don't really ever have a drink in the car anyway.

It seems like having a drink in the car is much more important to US owners over the european market!
I can't say I every think about taking a drink with me when I go out (even if I know I'll be in the car for a long time!) If I'm thirsty I generally stop off for a bottle of water or a coke and those bottles fit well between the side of the seat and the door pocket! I don't have any cup holders in my car - I think you have to spec the extended storage option to get the ones in the middle of the center consol!

Yeah, it seams that many things vary across different markets.

LOL. I remember once riding in a Chrysler Voyager, a somewhat unfortunate experience. I swear it had about 10 cupholders but there was only room for 7 people.

Since the "cupholders" in my E46 are both covered by the armrest, I use one to hold Italian mints and the other is for the discarded wrappers. But the 1er's "ugly" cupholder did come in handy when crossing the Nevada desert in 110oF heat. Tom |
