Replacing 135 Convertible
So I've had my 135 convertible since new in 2012.
Its got 65k on it and still runs fine but it might be time to upgrade. What's the best convertible for $80k or less? Go.

Wow, that's an opened statement. Need a little refinement to your question. Do you still want a rear seat or are you open to just a 2 seater?

It will not be a daily driver so it can be a two-seater, though I would prefer some room to carry stuff so I can take it on a weekend trip if I wanted.
I also don't plan on tracking it so it doesn't need to be a true sports car. But I don't object to it being fast ;-

I would love a manual but I am resigned to the fact that that might be unrealistic these days because it limits my choices too much.

A few options
New Z4 BMW 4 series convertible hardtop. I'd look at a used one & save the depreciation. Jaguar F-Type - comes AWD & RWD, coupe or convertible & new 2021 model coming out. Audi TT Roadster Porsche 718 Boxter - name recognition

Depends on what you mean by "best". My BMW option would be the 2 series convertible. You can find low mileage (under 15K) 3 year old CPOs starting at under $30K which IMO is the bang for the buck winner. It has a cloth top which means much less weight and a more useable trunk than the 4 series.
The TT is often flamed here (by folks who never drove one) but the latest generation 2016+ (which I also own) is a formidable performer and very unique (only about 1000 have been sold in the US the past few years) if you like being different than the crowd. It has a large trunk and is the only sports car with a compact spare if you like to take long trips. Similar CPOs start in the low $30s but you will likely have to search nationwide on cars.com, etc to get the best deal. In almost everyone's opinion, the best performer in that price range is the Corvette which is in your price range new with the latest mid-engine model. You have your choice of a targa top or pay a bit more for a true convertible. Expect to pay full MSRP. New 2019MY of the prior generation are still on lots nationwide with large discounts from MSRP. Reviews say both models perform better than cars costing 3x as much and the new mid-engine is the best ever. |

Where my mind has been headed is the AMG C63 (being stingy on options) or the C8 Corvette.
I actually forgot about the new Z4. Maybe the Toyota-ness will rub off and make it more reliable? I’m not crazy enough to buy GM product the first year of production and I hear they are getting a premium over sticker right now. So that would have to wait until next year. Does anyone know what will replace the M240?

So there will not be a convertible version of the M240 replacement in MY2022?
Also as far as the Porsche 718 goes $80k is at the low end and that's for what's basically a 4 cylinder Boxter. I know everyone loves it but I have a hard time getting past that.

Increase your budget and get a 718 GTS 4.0 Boxster. Has the current 911 flat six engine in 4.0L non-turbo form and a six speed manual. PDK will come "later" if that's your thing.

I would love to but I'm just not that rich.
I even considered a recent vintage used 911 but those are still $100k+

Right now my 135i convertible, that runs fine and hasn't even every been out in the rain, costs $0 other than maintenance. So I know the M240 is a newer and nicer car but is it worth $60k more than the $0 135i I have? That's my struggle with it. And yes its getting harder and harder to find convertibles, especially at a reasonable price point. And I expect as more and more cars go electric it will get worse. Hell, the Tesla doesn't even have a sunroof much less available as a convertible.

Yeah I'm thinking maybe Z4.
That at least seems new and different enough to justify the price over what I have now.

I'd be Z4 M40 gushing if MT was an option, a roadster without MT seems impossible. so what the 0-60 is slower when it's for ripping up a dropped spaghetti string mountain road.
however... Z4 M40 $70k is a fantastic car and MT has become a rotary phone or dodo bird |

Good luck with your search.
One thing is for certain. Convertibles in general are a dying breed. The trend now is away from convertible sports cars and coupes. We are now living in a world of SUV's and EVs. |

Unfortunately I am resigned to the fact that whatever my next car is it might not be a MT.
Its just reality. Most of my life I've had an MT car but I guess the world changes. That said it does seem ridiculous that they would make a roadster without even the option of an MT... If I just wanted the fastest car I would go buy the fastest version of the Model 3 and go 0-60 in 3 seconds or whatever. But somehow its still kind of boring.

My choices for a drivers car will stop being new at some point. You can’t sell me on ev or dct, it’s not why I love driving.
