There was no E46 M3 in 1996. The E46 M3 started at exactly $47,045 (including the GGT) in 2001.

I was confusing the sticker prices of the two cars, I know the release dates.

but just the same, the e46 was released 10 years ago, there is no way that 10 years of advancement for an M car will cost the same (or less!) as some are forecasting. The absolution minimum this car will base is $49K US

1) This is not an M3, it's a 1M, and therefore not in the same price range.
2) This car will utilize many parts from the e92 M3, which saves a lot of money across the board.

With that said, I don't think you're too far off in your base price estimate. We're all speculating at this point, but I think we'll see USD $46,750 with destination.

Prices:
M1 E82 = M3 E46
M3 E92 = M5 E39
But I hope this will not happen:
M1 F22 = M3 E92
M3 F32 = M5 E60

It is not possible to give any precise price estimation, specially EU<->US.

I say base M1 in EU 48.000-54.000 €. Even at 54.000 € it would be more than 20.000 € cheaper than base M3.
