I fixed it for you, not many young kids grow up with a poster of an M3 on their wall

ummm noooooooooooo......

e46 m4, e92 m3, e60 m5 all the M NA engines are all redline screamers. these arent american v8s with low rpm grunt and no gas at the top, the tq curves are flattttttttttttttt

the turbo'ed engines will run out of steam when the turbos get past their efficiency range which for smaller turbos is the higher revs.

edit:
if you threw on a huge single turbo supra-style then yes that turbo engine would probably have more high-end pull. but otherwise your statements are jsut not correct.

That statement is very true. I think at this point I rather buy a GTR or a Cayman. Maybe an e46m3 to fulfill the dream of owning one but I do not lust over a M3 as much as back in highschool and college. M3 is the gateway drug to more expensive and higher performance exotics

Turbo engines changed a whole lot over the last 20 to 25 years. At the time of the good old BMW 2002 turbo (or a bit later the Audi Quattro 1st generation), turbo engines had max. torque at around 4000+ rpm and below that, there was simply (almost) nothing. No power. no torque. At around 4000 rpm the increase in power was so dramatic, that RWD cars like the 2002 turbo weren't easy to drive. Turbo-lag was around 0.5-0.7 sec, but the boost and power thereafter was great. Yes, until red-line. Only the rev-limiter prevented you from blowing up the engine. Those turbos were quite big and together with the relatively low compression ratio (around 8:1) almost unusable below 3000 rpm.

This led to the development of newer turbo-charged engines that bring reasonable torque at around 1200-1500 rpm, but they fall off considerably beyond 6000 rpm. They "just stand in the exhaust gases way" ^^

Back to the 1M and today's turbocharged engines: technologies like twin/twin-scroll turbos try to bring low end power and start to also bring power beyond 6000 rpm. Let's hope that the 1M engine is a good start in that

Who cares if you read in a magazine that your car can do 200 mph and can pull x amount of G-forces if the only thing that you do is drive the f'ng car to the office 5 times a week?

Yes, the M3 is a faster car, on a track or open space than a 135 much like the 135 is much faster than many other cars and many other cars will destroy the M3...my question to the group, when was the last time you hit the limiter?

I think it was yesterday.

I don't like to baby my engines, and enjoy the shriek of high revs, even if in my 135i there isn't as much power at there is at say 3k.
But, its' not a bad thing to take advantage of gearing either, even if the power has dropped off quite a bit.

About two weekends ago on my way to the 'Ring at 4:30AM on a clear, empty A6

It takes about 3-3 and a half hour just to get to Kaiserslautern (doing 100 Mph)

I have never seen a more misinformed comment said with so much seriousness

Turbos are good for low-end torque and in the stock N54 case the boost is almost non-existent on top but it is responsible for the 1300RPM max torque. Tuned N54s hold more boost on top but that is not what BMW intended. I think every 135i/335i owner felt that the engine falls flat on it's face after 5500RPM.

The naturally aspirated engines like the M3's V8 need to be revved hard to be kept in their powerband.

That said, there is no way an 135i can keep up with an M3 over 80mph. There is at least a 100hp difference and at speed the hp matters the most.
