HID

I have been doing research, and I know they are many other threads on this topic, but I just wanted to get a straight answer, and in one place.
Has anybody been able to succesfully convert their standar h7 halogen bulbs to HID without going the expensive way via bmw projectors and new headlight casing which is around 1200$. I know HIDs w/o a projector is illegal, I'm well aware of this, but right now i just want to see if anyone has been able to succesfuly convert their lights over to HIDs, and how.

To convert the H7s, you just need a D2R HID kit and an adaptor for the H7 but you will blind oncoming traffic. Your beam pattern will be splattered.

Do you know if this works for sure? Because I've been through two sets of HID kits from different companies, neither of them worked.

im working on retrofitting the oem bmw stuff. Ive been buying the pieces on ebay and elsewhere. im no where near 1200. ive figured out how to run HID with the original housing, aftermarket bulb and ballast or original bulb and ballast. not sure how to get the adaptive part running without a recode though.

can you explain to me how you figured out to run your HIDs with aftermarket bulb and ballast? The reason I'm asking is because my HIDs strobe then go off, and I get a no light warning on my dash, for more info check out my previous threads. I'm trying to figure out who has been able to successfully convert over and how.

Theoretically it is supposed to work. From what you say though, it sounds like the computer controls the headlight voltage and the strobe effect could either be a bad/cheap ballast or the computer cutting it out because its not getting the proper readings or no reading from what the halogen system was giving it previously. HIDs you 35w vs the halogen 55w.

Have you tried just running straight power from a car battery to the headlights and test to see if they work and are solid?

I plan to retrofit a set of HID lights into my E30 projector ellipsoids and I will just be cutting/splicing wires as the system is just a simple, relayed, on/off circuit.

The headlights were solid, they were straight from the box, I got them at a store, didn't order them so they weren't subjected to any punishment from shipping or anything. The guy who owned the store let me test the lights out in the lot to see if they worked before buying them, turns out they didn't, so I never had to buy them. This is also the 2nd pair of headlights that have done this now so i'm positive it's not because of defective headlights. I think the wattage may have something to do with it but I'm not sure. Has anyone actually succussfully switched over to an HID kit yet? Was also looking at the e90 post where someone did a parachute method, but I didn't exactly understand how it worked, and i did read the whole thread.

I would test them to direct 12v source like with a spare car battery or a booster box before plugging them into your car. This way you can rule out defective headlights.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
