Actually it's Spartanburg, SOUTH Carolina. And just because the locals there say that BMW stands for "Bubba Makes Wheels" doesn't mean that they're putting out bad cars there!

What jumps out at me in these pics is how absolutely HORRENDOUS the DOT-mandated orange & red side marker lights, absent from the euro models, look on the US-spec Z4. Those huge round lights just stuck into the middle of the bumpers at each end - YUCK!! They could have avoided this by designing these into the front turn signals and rear lights (i.e. slight wraparound) but nooo, they tacked them on as an ugly afterthought. Shame.

Nice and all , but somehow, I think I'd like a Cayman S better (speaking purely from the point of aesthetics).

I thought so too, until I sat in the Cayman. I was expecting better materials for the extra $20k over the price of the MZ4. Another thing I liked was that BMW did the right thing. Convertibles always cost more than it's coupe counterpart. BMW did this with the new M Coupe/Roadster. Porsche, on the other hand, stuck it to it's customers and charged the a hefty premium to get the car that's much cheaper for them to make.

By the way, the new BMW has an incredible leather dash and door inserts with a carbon fibre pattern pressed into it. It's really cool looking. The Porsche has nothing exciting, unless you pony up another 5-10k here or there to have the interior upgraded.

Here's the roadster that was at the show. Too bad the Imola Red didn't look too good under the blueish tinted lighting.

One thing I can say.. The Z3 based M Coupe/Roadster had much, much more aggressive wheels. I think the ones on these cars are fairly bland. They could have done better...

Actually, I prefer that approach to integrating them into the headlight unit. Unlike the E90 headlights, which apparently cannot be modified or baked open without damage, it looks like you can simply pop the reflectors out and paint them over a-la the E46 coupe reflectors of yore. Granted, doing it with one of the special metallic paints would be difficult (might have to body shop it), but those with black or white cars should have no problems.

And painted circles (which most people won't notice) are much better than hideous orange eyebrows.

Based on the spy shots I've seen, I'd almost be tempted to buy the E92 coupe over the E90 sedan JUST to avoid having the fugly amber headlight reflectors.

Sorry, south carolina I don't mean to imply that the good people of south carolina can't build cars as well as the german natives, but that's just what I've been reading from First Drive reports.

And I didn't even want to get started on those damn reflectors. Of all shapes, ROUND?!?!?!
