The value of new tires

Ok, so I don't drive my 1M much. I have a million reasons for this, but ultimately, while it felt special driving it, the driving experience was always OK. I mean I liked the wiggle I got going into 2nd gear, the shifter, sound, and steering feel are amazing (I daily a 992 C4S) - but... well, it was more about the investment than the drive.

Until this week. I put new tires on. Went with the PSS (I don't drive this thing in the rain and from what I read, the PSS have better turn in for street feel).

WOW. This car is transformed. I think I forgot what it was like to drive it when I first got it. I can NOT believe how different the car feels.

I would tell my 18 year old that the 992 blew away the 1M in most respects, but crap, now I'm having 2nd thoughts. I think the only downside is the incredibly high seating position due to my power seats in the 1M.

And the HK stereo blows away my $5K Burmester stereo in my 911. At least it sounds that way to me.

What an amazing car. Sad I waited this long, but happy I did it.

I'm very curious to know what your before/after new tires observations have been?

Before...
Tires were 11 years old... and if you can imagine, they were rock hard. I thought they were bad, but on smooth and dry pavement at 80 degrees, in 2nd gear, at about 1/2 throttle they started to spin. I knew things were bad then.

Each and every bump was brutal, and the car would slide like crazy. Some of this I thought of as "Yea, the 1M is just crazy".

After
Bumps are not 1/2 as bad. Yes, the PS4 would make the car ride even better - but the car is still way more smooth than my OG M2.

It sticks around turns and the rear wheels don't spin like crazy.

The entire car is transformed. It is just completely different.

These cars are too good to drive to be just investment cars but with the rarity and values going the way they are I totally get it.

I bought my 135 3 1/2 years ago on runflat Bridgestones. They wore out within 10 months and were replaced with non-runflat Michelin PSS's. The car was transformed into something much better. 10 months ago I fitted new Koni shocks, 7 months ago I fitted new Michelin PS4's. The car is like a go-kart, especially in the wet. Steering, brake, throttle, you tell it what to do, it does it.

I agree PSS just work on this car, I imagine PS4’s would be great as well, but new PSS feel great on The 1M.

But there is a downside?

New tires mean having more fun.
Having more fun means…."a blown charge pipe"

Hey! Yes there's a fb group of both 1M owners and socal 1M owners. Here's a link to the socal one - defo request to join. Usually meet at the regular car meets around LA/OC.

I think the best all round tire for the 1M currently is the PS4S in all conditions. It's just an amazing tire.

I've had original PSS, R888 and R888r on Apex wheels, Cup 2s, and PS4S.

Had the 4S on my E90 M3 and LOVED them and about to throw some on the 1M and stoked! My 11 year old PSS's are grumpy and old.

I don't doubt that the PS4S as at the peak of the max performance pyramid.

I have been pleased with the street performance that I've gotten out of the Conti ECS on the 1M. I felt like the ECS fulfilled the value portion of the equation a little better for me.

If I'm doing street driving that allows me to tell the difference between the PS4S/ECS and I'm working on shaving 1/10s of seconds in the Stoplight Grand Prix, I am probably behaving in a fairly antisocial manner.

The key to the 1M (IMVHO) is driving it up to temps every 2 weeks.

Something about this car just works when driven more frequently.

Well, after 11+ years, the weakest part of the car was guaranteed to blow up. I just wish the aftermarket ones didn't look so... aftermarket.

Considering the 1M runs higher boost psi than other N54s, but uses the same charge pipe, it is pretty much guaranteed to fail unless you never drive in MDM.

There have been 1M owners who have had PSS and PS4S on their 1Ms and have said that PSS are in fact the ideal tire for the 1M.

The PS4S are the "better" tire, but the PSS have sharper turn in and more spirited loss of traction attributes!

The last time I replaced tires a couple of years ago—I also went PSS as my tire of choice. They are perfect for these cars.

I had my ER charge pipe powdercoated the same satin black as used for the various factory brackets. Even with a black Tial BOV it looks nearly OEM.

My issue is the hose clamps look way out of place. I'll grab a picture today
