18" wheel ET 35 on 118i

Hi all, im running on breyton GTS 18" rims with et35 for front and rear. I fitted 225 40 18 front and (recently) 245 40 18 rear. Noticed tt theres some rubbing in the rear when im gg over humps! Sigh! Is there anything i can do other than obviously changing rims or smaller tyres?

I also notices that the rear right wheel gap is LOWER than the rear left after i fixed on 245 40 18. Any idea why is this so? Both tyres are in thickness 40 but why is my rear right lower by ~0.6mm?

Thks

Normally we use:

Rim size front: 7,5x18 offset:49
Rim size rear: 8,5x18 offset:52

Tyre size front: 215/40 R18 85Y (alt. 225/40)
Tyre size rear: 245/35 R18 88Y (alt. 255/35)

You should at least have 35 instead of 40 in the rear if using different sizes Fr/Back

Garage List
245/40 18 is the wrong size for the rear.
Should be 245/35 18

the both are correctly.

now... in ET37 8.0" is ok, but in ET35... i dont know... maybe with 7.5 will be fine, you have to test.

Thks all. But oddly the rubbing is only happening to my rear right. I noticed tt my rear right is lower than the left by ~0.6mm. I did not do anything to lower the car. Could it be a faulty spring or suspension or sth like tt?

0.6 mm ?!?
That's about the thickness of a nail. Doesn't sound like much at all.

Still doesn't sound like much.
Are you parked on a flat road?
Is a heavy person sitting in the car on one side?

Some pics might help.

the difference in gap is quite noticable. initially thought its just psychological effect after i swop from 225 to 245 rear hence use a ruler to measure and confirm the gap. Went to a random workshop today to have it check and the staff told me he suspect is a faulty absorber? he suggested changing the absorber and if it still doesnt solve, get the spring change.

Yea. parked on flat road and im always driving alone. could be be due to a bad absorber as suggested? i'll go back to my BMW service centre to have it check real soon. afraid tt they might just push the blame to my aftermarket upsized rim..

Why not put he original wheels back on and measure again.
If they are still uneven, than its definitely the suspension.
If not, then it is due to the aftermarket rims.

Traded the Original wheels away when i got this set of breyton hence cant try out.

Updates: brought my car to bmw service center and they suspect is a faulty absorber too. Booked appointment to send the car in for inspection next wk. Hope it gets rectify!
I went to another tyre shop to get a 2nd opinion and the staff suggest tt i change to 255 35 18 after i get the absorber problem solved so tt the gap will be even wider for both rear and hence confirm no more rubbing. True?

ok took some pics of the rear right and rear left wheels.

RIGHT SIDE ( PROBLEMATIC)

LEFT SIDE

Apologise tt the Pictures are not very well taken but it just gives an idea tt the right gap is indeed smaller than the left which result in rubbing at times.

The BMW Service Centre technician told me its NORMAL for right side to be lower?

the shock absorber theory doesn't sound very logical i guess... This part does not support the car at all... Only the spring does it. You can remove the shock absober and still be able to drive the car (ok ok absolutely not the same behavior on the road but possible). You can even take the bottom screws off the shock absorbers in order to let them loose and check if the gap is still different.
Did you check the positioning of both springs on the rear suspension to evaluate if they're on their places ?

After all the hassle, i decided to swop back to 225/40 tyres and the rubbing problem is solved. With regards to the height difference issue, after running a suspension test, my local dealer told me its perfectly fine for 1 to be lower than the other, max tolerance of 10mm. Had no choice but just to take their words for it.

When i took out the 245/40 rubber for the swop, i bend over to have a look and indeed only the right side(lower side) rub. The fender has got evidenxe of rubbing but not for the left. Not planning to do anything abt it unless problem surface again.

right side is lower due to the fact that the gas tank is located in the right rear
