You would need to go visit a dealer and they would load the CDroms. Your car doesn't have a USB HD system right? For later cars with the USB port in the glove box... you simply can go online or to a 3rd party and pay/download the new maps, save it to a USB stick and then insert it into the glove box port.
New map updates come out quarterly now - I believe.

But the OP has an older Navi system... so he needs to have the maps loaded on his car's trunk mounted CDrom, then the system will update. On the newer cars with a hard drive system and the glove box USB port... its much easier to do an update.

http://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/47...ATE/?Year=2016 or from a third party vendor... http://www.bmwnavi.eu/ For the OP with the old CDroms... I think your looking at ~$200 for the CDroms. Your best bet is to ask a dealer how much they charge.

I got my update from another vendor in the forum and it works perfectly. I am considering replacing the hdd with ssd to speed it up.

My alternative is using Waze on my Android phone pumping video to the stock nav screen. Better traffic situation awareness along with police and speed/redlight camera warnings. Also, no need to pay for regular map updates. |

I did a write up just over a year ago on installing the Bimmertech rear view camera retrofit with the SmartView box:
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1207855 You'll see a picture in that thread where I was mirroring the Bimmerpost webpage on my Android phone to my nav screen. Absolutely love the system. I used at various times this week while I was out visiting clients and was able to get around the stupidity that is DC Metro traffic. |

Very nice but that looks a bit more invasive than I want to get with my car. Honestly, I found a CPO M4 and wondering how bad it would be to swap from the 135is to it lol....most likely won't do it but dang it's nice.
I thought you just needed to copy the contents of the 12gb drive onto a small ssd. I thought you just had to pull out the bottom of the center stack. |

As for the hard drive, if I recall correctly, it's some wierd file system on it. It's not just pulling the bottom of the center stack. You have to pull the radio/CD/DVD part too as it's all one unit (CIC). Look at the pics in my write up for the Bimmertech rear view camera again. You'll see the radio unit/CIC extends down to the blank panel. I thought it was empty behind it and was going to be able to install the multimedia unit in that area. I was unpleasantly surprised when I pulled the trim off and saw the CIC extends into that space.

So I'm assuming that for a 2013 135i we have the CIC navigation system and not the NBT? If so we want the "premium" upgrade for CIC correct?

I second that thought for using Waze. Good for directions, navigation, traffic and speed traps. My 135i doesn't have the Sat Nav option and I purposely steered clear knowing that updates would be an issue. On the downside I now have a large ashtray on my dash.
