Fix Armrest rattle?
Whenever I go over surfaces such as bricks or pavers in my 1er coupe the center armrest rattles. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what was the fix?
Thanks. Last edited by 135forthewin; 02-24-2009 at 08:04 PM.. |

This may be a dumb question, but is the armrest empty? I was disappointed to find there isn't a rubber mat in there to soften any contents from rattling.

IO could say "Don't drive over any rough surfaces"! If it is empty, take it to the dealer. Otherwise, put a small towel on the bottom and see if that helps. Is it properly tightened down? Is the top tight or loose? I am sure it is a simple fix.

Body Equipment May 2008 Technical Service SUBJECT Rattle from the Armrest Hinge MODEL E82, E88 (1 Series) produced up to 3/2008 SITUATION A rattling noise may be heard when the armrest is folded down and the vehicle is driven over rough roads. The noise is eliminated if any downward pressure is placed on the armrest. CAUSE The limit stop on the armrest folding mechanism is not adequately damped. CORRECTION Add felt tape to the limit stops. PROCEDURE Remove the armrest cover per Repair Instruction RA 51 16 196. Press the lower edge of the hinge covers (1) outward from the bottom to release the lower part of the cover, as shown here on the right side cover. Remove the fasteners for the retaining springs (1) and then remove the springs. Fold up the armrest and pull it rearward to separate the two halves of the armrest. Clean the vertical contact surface (1) to remove any grease that may be present. This should be done on both sides of the armrest. Cut 2 felt strips to 10mm x 15mm. Install 1 felt strip to each of the contact surfaces cleaned in step 5. Apply Wurth Glide or a suitable alternative to the inside (concave) contact surface of the retaining springs. Reinstall all components and ensure that the armrest moves up and down smoothly. PARTS INFORMATION Part Number Description Quantity 61 13 6 908 716 Felt Tape 1 Wurth True Glide, article number 0893 989, may be used for this procedure. i work at a dealership. it's covered under warranty, so you have nothing to worry about. i've even gotten this done myself, so the noise is completely gone. definately not something you wanna do.

As for the rubber at the bottom, just like the felt tape you can buy felt and rubber pads with adhesive on the back (lowes, homedepot) in the furniture aisle with the knobs and stuff. I had to do this all over a Toyota I had the damn rattley bastard that it was.

Wow great job man! Could you shed some light on the passenger door and dashboard rattles? I know one of my rattles comes from the plastic covering under the steering wheel cuz it goes away if i put on hand on it. I've told this to the dealer and they were suppose to fix it but its still there.

My collection of rattles seem to change with the weather. B-pillar sub 40 degrees, then I get steering column cover and door in the summer months. I finally found the worst one though!!!! I always thought it was coming from the inner workings of the driver door, sounded like rattling sunglasses. IT'S THE BUTTON ON THE CRUISE CONTROL STALK!!!!
I'll certainly request a fix for that and armrest at next service, but for now I put one of my wife's tiny, clear hair bands to hold it in place. I am a happy man!!!! That son of a bitch was pissing my off on a daily basis, and visited the shop twice with failed attempts. |

Good luck!
With all those rattles, you'll be the expert in finding where they come from. I have some of my own (wind noise on the highway, dash/windshield and... sunroof) but I'll make sure to ask you if anything abnormal happens.
Again, good luck. |
