Shop cannot mount my tires
Hey guys, i need some advice.
I have a completely stock 2011 135i M-Sport 6mt. A few months back, based on a conversation with Gill, I bought a set (225/40-18 F and 255/35-18 R) of Michelin Pilot A/S Plus instead of the DWS. After reading many many posts, and with speaking to Gill, the 225/40 -255/35-18 combo fits. DO THEY FIT??? Fast forward to yesterday, I took my tires to a local shop owned by a world champion SCCA Pro driver. They were on tireracks recommended installer list. I drop the car off at 2pm, they say they are a little backed up and give me the keys to a loaner BMW. AWESOME RIGHT? That's customer service for a local shop. They were very nice right off the bat. They call at 6pm and say, "These are not the OE size. We are having trouble getting the 1st tire mounted. The front left tire (225) is too big for the wheel and it wont get a bead/seal." I didn't know what to say. I asked them if they tried to mount the 255s on the front by mistake. She said, "No, we tried the 225." She said they are gonna start working on it first thing Monday when the owner is in and maybe he has more knowledge/advice with this. I was a little worried considering this is not only a repair facility for highend cars, but a speed shop too. Called and left a message for Gill. I am frustrated to say the least and starting to stress because we have another snowstorm coming Sunday/Monday and cannot get through it on stock RFTs. Luckily they are allowing me to borrow the loaner till Mondayish. GUYS...I NEED YOUR ADVICE PLEASE!!! miiipilot

They should fit. I had 225/255 combo that gill recommended me last year and the worked fine. Unless they don't have the proper mounting equipment......then it can be a bitch.

So the tire shop took 225/40 off the front, installing the same size tire and telling you they are to big? If 225/40 came off and the new 225/40 are to big there is a defect with the tire, they do not know what they are doing or they damaged your car and are trying to fix it over the weekend. Something is not right here. I would go by Saturday and check your car out. At least they did not blame the wheel for being to small. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Yeah this is super wierd, I run those sizes with DWS's and about a 1/2 inch drop all around with no problems. My tire shop had them done in an hour and a half.

I have those exact tires and sizes on our 135i on stock wheels. It took Discount tore about thirty minutes to install them and they certainly didn't seem to have any issues with them.

Those sizes easily fit the OE wheels. Many, many members here run that same sizing.

Thanks guys for all the replies.
I thought that those sizes would easily fit based on all the great info on this site and with speaking to Gill regarding this when I was placing my order. They seem to get the RFT off the 1st tire just fine (I inquired). They only tried 1 tire, the front left, and said that it was too big for the rim. The shop is not open on Sat, so I cannot stop by. They are going to call me on Monday. The owner is due back then and hopefully I will have more info at that time. Will let all of you know how things turn out. miiipilot

They should definitely fit. Something fishy is going on at the shop.

The shop is a repair facility for mainly BMW, Audi, Merc and Porsches. They only service foreign makes.
When they first called to notify me there was an issue, I thought they were talking about getting the front RFT off. She said there wasn't an issue with the removal of my RFT at all. They said the new front tire wont get a bead/seal. They said the new front tires (225) is too wide for the rim. IDK!!! And then went into the fact that my new set (225/255) were not the OE size. I informed them that I was assured that that setup would be fine for my stock 135i application. Hmmmmmm starting to worry that something might have happened to my ride in their care Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr hope not though. Thanks as always for all your replies. Will definetely let you know how this turns out. THANK GOD I didn't pick up my car before it was complete...We are getting a pretty nasty snow storm and the stockies wouldn't cut it today. Gotta call em before I roll into work tomorrow am. miiipilot

Find another shop - these guys are sleepwalking through it. You're looking at a plus one increase in tire size which is pretty plausible with any car make. Even your BMW dealer will do this for you. They did mine before I got a second set of wheels.

I would ask the shop the right questions. What is then lowest profile tire their equipment can install? There are alot of shops are DC that can't install run flat tires or tires larger than 18 inches or lower in profile than 40. It os all about the wheel machine. Conversely, there are a few shops (Mach V included) who specialize in the installation of larger, lower profile and run flat tires.

Poor update...
Stopped by the shop on my way to work...Forgot work keys in the car and needed them. They were waiting on the owner to get back from California, but his flight was canceled. They said, "The 225/255 combo is more of a race setup and I'm not comfortable having these guys do it. I don't want to damage your wheels TRYING to get them on. You are more than welcome to keep the loaner until Wednesday and the owner will be back." I am very appreciative of their hesitation and their courtesy of an extended loaner. If it hasn't been a blizzard the past several days (with more coming), I would pack my tires up and roll down the street to another TR recommended installer. If they were unable to install lower profile tires, why post this on TR's site? Most shops are pretty tight with the shops around them, surprised they didnt run down to somewhere with better equipment and get the tires mounted....oh well, pretty awesome they gave you a loaner.

they ground up one of your wheels removing those god-awful run flats and now they're either waiting for a wheel repair guy or they had to order a new wheel.

The local tire place here just bought me a new 261M wheel a few weeks ago after scratching the hell out of it. ALWAYS do a walk-around with a manager prior to handing them the keys. A stupid $20 job cost them $480 for being careless.

Wow is that $35.00 per wheel for mount and balance for a 35 series tire? Man I am glad I was able to get mine done on base. It was $8.00 a tire.
