“I would moan about this not being a "real" M engine if it weren't so damn good in the first place. The purist in me says that this car, wearing an M badge, should have an 8000-rpm normally aspirated derivative of this motor. The rest of me tells myself to shut up.”

I wonder why none of the reviews are in depth on the throttle response and engine dynamics????? Does it pull to redline? Is there noticeable lag? How does it compare to the 135? Marketing BS that has been edited by the likes of Scott26 before it is released.

I'd like more details too, but I don't see any conspiracies behind this.
I've had enough experience with reporters to know that they don't let anyone other than their editor edit what they write. The only text they would share with outsiders would be direct quotes from BMW sources they want to confirm (and I've had experiences where reporters didn't even bother to do that, and got it wrong). Anyway, I suspect the lack of detail in some of these reviews has a lot to do with the length of the ride and the fact that the car is a beaten up prototype, not to mention the fact that their editors won't likely let them go on for page after page about a prototype. I suspect most readers, other than a few hundred (maybe thousand) of us following the goings on in this forum, don't care about enough to want to read about that level of detail. |

We all have to live with the fact that the first real tests and comparisons will appear in late Q1 2011 (assuming that production starts in March). |

One thing you can get from these previews/reviews is that, if you drive this car - you get some sort of thrill from it. And some of these reviewers are hardened car cynics.
The regular bloke, like most of us, must be in for a real treat..

You would think a car of this pedigree would be defined by substance not hype, but this may be becoming par for the course for the future of the M division. Hype/tease/advertise a future product so much that the hysteria becomes the selling point more so than any true performance credentials or lack thereof. I am more worried about this BMW philosophy than the actual specs of the car itself, which I'm sure will be quite good. This ideology does not bode well for the future of BMW performance cars if they need this kind of treatment to sell, when in the past it feels more like the quality of the product spoke for itself. |

The journalists need to address much more ... and they might not all have the insight that many of you guys here have. So they talk about e.g. throttle response but they don't focus on it. Bad, since the 1///M deserves focusing on it ... I'm pretty sure |

Actually all the things you guys mentioned have been covered in the various reviews. Throttle response, steering, cornering, power band.. everything.
Especially the first few that came out. They just haven't been covered in depth, which is wise if you're a professional reviewer as you only had the car for a limited run and the model isn't the finished production car.
