I have a E87, 118i (2005) ......

No! Not only those oil weights... but the oil ALSO must meet BMW specs:

Long Life 1 or Long Life 4 rated, PLUS it also must be of least API SM/CF, ACEA C2, C3. LL-4 can be used where LL-1 is spec'd for. But LL-1 can not be used for LL-4 areas.

LL-1 = high sulfur fuel (USA/Canada/Mex/Austrailia/ect...)
LL-4 = low sulfur fuel (Germany/ECE)

BMW says to use an oil that meets the above oil specs (API SM/CF, ACEA C2, C3; LL-1 or LL-4) and that comes in a 5w30, 0w30, or 0w40 weight.

What transmision do you have? Auto or Manual?

I am not sure about your ECCentric Shaft Fault Code. What is the number/code? Have you looked on Bavarian Tech's website? They have a code listing. How did you read the codes in the first place?

Does your engine rev up past 4K rpms? I googled the ECCentric... and found this... Looks like it ain't cheap!

Without doing much searching, are any AMSoil products approved by BMW?

No.

All BMW approved oils for North America will have "BMW LL-01" referenced on the container.

The more interesting question is... what is the consequence of using an oil that doesn't have the LL-01 reference?

The LL-01 test mainly adds the need for long oil life above other oil quality tests, so a non-LL-01 oil may not have suitable properties over a 25,000km/15,000mile life. Changing a non-LL-01 oil more frequently than the BMW recommended interval would be advisable. If the car is still warranted by BMW, then using a non-LL-01 oil could void your warranty.

This is exactly the reason why only LL-01 oil is used in my car. When I am out of warranty, will I use something else? Probably, but until then, she only drinks the expensive kool aid.

Ok, so what are the BMW LL-01 oils?

Is there a lit of them? Or just go to the dealer and get ripped off because its sold by the dealer?

That's the theory, of course.
In practice one can achieve the same goal, as mentioned above, by changing oil more often.
That's what I do. During warranty, I let the dealership change the oil at their specified interval. At mid mark, I throw in my own oil change. I don't see how a non-LL-01 oil (given the right viscosity) can be bad since it's an extra oil change, above and beyond the recommendation.
Even out of warranty, if I use only non-LL-01, I'm changing oils twice as often. Oil longevity is simply not an issue.
My reason for doing this isn't even that I don't trust the oil will last that long. I don't trust the filter will last 15K miles.

In North America there are 3 readily available ones of the correct viscosities:
BMW 5W30 - Manufactured by Castrol, not the same as Castrol-branded 5W30
Castrol 0W30 - Manufactured in Germany or Belgium
Mobil 1 0W40 - "European Car Formula"

No, it hasnt been, jackass.

There are posts mentioning different brands and weights, but no list with "here are all the LL-01 oils". Thats what i was asking for.

aerobod - thanks.

im in germany, so i guess ill look around and see what is in the auto stores here so i dont have to pay the dealer premium.

also, im my searching of google i found that AMSoil is supposedly working on getting an LL-01 oil approved by bmw. so maybe by my 15k oil change they will have something. pretty partial to them since its all ive ever run in anything that takes oil and ive never had an issue thats been oil related in any way.

Now you have a problem with what BMW says? Are you serious?
And where do you think the list in post #35 comes from?
Didn't you thank him for that list?

Admit that you didn't read the thread, that you were prematurely and unnecessarily abrasive, and move on.

Sorry, I didn't notice you are in Germany, you need an LL-04 oil, as mentioned by Dackelone earlier in the thread. You have a lot more choice in Europe, here are some: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-686-bmw-longlife-04.aspx

Here is THE LL-4 listing from my BMW Zentrum. These are all the oils approved for LL4 in BMW's.

BMW approved motor oils... aka THE LIST!!!

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=LL-4+aka+list

A LL-4 oil can be used where LL-1 is spec'd but not the other way around. LL-4 approved oils are designed to be used with low(to no) sulfur fuels - mainly sold in Europe. I use LL-4 oil in my US spec 15i, bc I use German (low/no sulfur) fuel.

I use German Castrol RS Edge 0w40 LL-4 oil in my car. I buy it from the oeldepot24.de

They also have THE BEST deals on BMW dealer oils too. 6 euro per liter vs the dealer at 23 to 32 euros per!

I'm not disagreeing with your logic, however, if something were to happen, and BMW decided to blame it on non LL-01 oil, it would be you and your attorney vs. BMWNA and their lubrication engineers, chemical engineers, powertrain engineers, and the backing of their litigation department (If you could afford legal fees to do so). Magnuson–Moss can only get you as far as your wallet can afford even if it directly applies (In this case, it wouldn't because BMW does provide free service during the warranty period).

If something happened and they drew oil from your crankcase, and performed analysis on it, and it fell far short of whatever makes LL-01 oil so special, then they could deny you warranty claim, even if, the OCI was much sooner than the factory requires. If you ask me, it's just not worth it. Especially when here in the US, you can find M1 0w-40 for $5/qt.

I completely agree with you regarding shorter OCI, as matter of fact, I change it myself at 5k and 10k intervals and let BMWNA pick up the tab at 15k intervals.
