Help needed with shattering or excessive vibration, loss of power.

Hi all,
I’m having an issue all of a sudden. Today for the first time my 1m shattered briefly when I put it on 3rd gear and try to floor the gas pedal. The car shattered briefly and became normal. The second time I purposely put it on 3rd gear while on 2nd at 2500rpm and tried to accelerate hard. The car shattered and the engine light came on and stayed on until I put it in the garage. I was only 1/5 mile away from home, but I could feel the car having no power and shake lightly. After I turned it off, turned it back on and the engine light was off and the engine sound or vibration seemed normal. I repeated the on and off cycle a few more times and no issues. I year to drive it. It got me concerned.
Any of you have any experience with this or knowledge to what it could be ? I was driving the car hard at that time but have done so in the past with no issues. Any help would be appreciated.

I stopped thinking clearly when it happened. I think it should be the ignition coil. I had a similar issue in Lincoln Navigator a few years back and it was the coils. Thoughts ?

I’m guessing it should have stored codes so that would be my personal first step.

How many miles on it? I had issues like that around 60,000 miles and a walnut blast cured it.

I have 58k miles at this time. I first noticed it yesterday and I plan to drive it tomorrow. Can you please explain “walnut blast” ?

What does this cost, out of curiosity?

From the sound of it seems like the engine was misfiring when under load.

I guarantee that you can repeat it by going up a slope in third or fourth gear when flooring the throttle in low or mid rpm.

Most likely caused by excessive intake valve fouling from carbon build up. Get a walnut blast.

Highly variable. Some SoCal places run promotional deals as low as $200. NorCal is more like $600-700+.

Thank you. I’m at 43k miles and don’t have any symptoms but nice to know the range.

Thanks, I’ll check more into it. Also looking into car service records, I found out that the car had one of the ignition coils replaced at 41k miles from the BMW dealer of Atlanta, so it could be another coil as well. I’ll update my findings once I get down to it. Another strange thing is that once I placed the car in sport mode, did not show the issue. It could have been just a coincidence anyway.

Makes great sense. Thanks for sharing, I definitely would like to do it just to clean it regardless if that’s the problem or not. I’ll look into it locally and see if anyone offers it. I live in Southwest Florida.

I went ahead and bought all plugs and coils. It was #2 cylinder misfire code and the mechanic (friend of mine not BMW) said that they commonly fail. I went to local BMW parts dept. and they had them in stock and also confirmed that they often fail after 50k miles and they sell them often. Got a very fair price and will change myself.

Can I ask what a fair price is on these?

Man, 50k Miles seems early for coils, but what do I know?

I initially thought so as well. I did not expect to change them at this time but since now there are two of them that needed replacing, I decided to change the whole set. There is no telling how long the other 4 will have.
I got 6 sparks oem bmw, 6 coils oem as well for $383 including tax. $49 per coil and $11 per spark. Not sure if I needed the sparks but might as well.

Good to know, thank you. I had one of the orig S4’s (the 5 cyclinder/URS4) and as big of a dumpster fire as Audi’s have been for me, it’s coils lasted 130k+ Miles.

The oem bmw sparks are Bosch, the coils are Delphi.

The most current model listed according to real oem and the coil thread is 12138657273. I had read that BMW had changed the manufacturer for N54 Coils to Eldor.

See the lookup in real OEM. The current part number is: 12138657273

I then looked up what that part number fits and it clearly states N54 US 1M Coupe.

I then looked up your part number 12138616153, and it appears to be an older version that goes back to the E46 M3 and is only listed for the N55 135i.

That is a different motor. It will most likely be OK but for the rest of us that will change them, I wanted to add this to make sure that people get the best, most current part number and coil.

BMW parts guys make mistakes too. A lot of them just assume 1M is same as 135i but 135i also came with N55 motor.

I also checked ECS and it does show the 153 for the 1M, so as I said, it is probably fine but the Eldor is the latest iteration. Since the old ones failed early, I would prefer to take my chances with the newer ones in case BMW changed manufacturer because of the high failure rate.
