BMS Dual Cone Intake-Thoughts? Pros and Cons?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to to order the BMW dual cone intake for my 2008 135. Does anyone have any horror stories regarding these?

I would love to hear the positives and the negatives before ordering.

Already have the power kit 2 and an exhaust. Any idea on HP gain?

Thanks!
Mike

Cons: As with any of these types of intakes, you'll hear a sucking sound. I like it but some non-enthusiast types might not.

Not much in terms of power gains by itself, but they all add up. It's pretty inexpensive and with a few other mods, it'll help.

There is a lot of past discussion on this board about DCI's. Some people love DCI's and others swear the stock air box is better with a drop-in. In the end, if you want the sound and you have $100, might as well give it a shot and report back your findings. I'd recommend other mods before that like a FMIC but it all depends on your budget and what you're looking to get out of it.

It's just an intake, don't over think it. There are WGDC considerations and people will go back and forth about the impact of an open filter on CATs, but at the end of the day it's really not a major modification. I'm perfectly satisfied with the BMS DCIs for what it's worth.

Very loud. I couldn't detect any real power increase. Took them off. Back to stock.

I would consider that as a pro

Pro: Flows a bit better than stock(especially with higher than stock boost levels). Also sound

Con: prone to sucking hot air from the engine bay

No power gain unless you way up the horsepower curve. Does give easy access to the left side of the engine.

its only 95$ give it a try and if you do not like it,you can easily sell it for around 80$ if its still in perfect condition (Im pretty sure you will keep it though )

waste of time and waste of money. I never bought one but I have many friends who did. I installed it for them and as soon as they got back from test driving it they said take it off instantly they trashed the dci. went back to stock plus BMC drop in plus MS scoops and couldnt be happier. I run that exact setup and im more then happy

if you really want to waste 95 bucks by all means go right ahead!

guys, if you know how a BMW Intake works, its BY NATURE a cold air intake. If anything by adding these Aftermarket intakes, (especially ones exposed to the engine bay) you're bringing in hotter air. The BMW intake is right there behind the grill, i dont think you could do better than that.

Yes you can especially when your car is modded and you need more air flow but what do i know all the experts and manufacturers agree that it does wonders to your car in terms of performance(if you car is modded, if not it won't do any harm you will just get a better sound).

I got them and couldn't be happier with them. They have been on for over a year now and the sound is great. They will give you an increase in power when coupled with other mods. Give Terry's DCI test VS Stock thread a good read and make your own decision.

Can someone post a sound clip from inside the cabin? I couldn't find one on YouTube.

The OEM ones are also designed to be more quite. I would have to imagine that there's more surface area in the BMS ones to allow greater air flow.

What I can say is that in my previous racecar, it had somewhat similar OEM style to the BMW OEM one. We certainly added a single cone to the car. Also found differences among the various cones. I do think there is some potential for gains, but do agree it won't be anything crazy.

I think it is a wash. If you want some sound do it, but it won't really be a power gain. The stock air box is designed very well.

Not BMS DCI, but injen dci. +10hp gain on top end, really no cons besides noise, but that isn't even a con if you don't care.

Not an apples to apples test... says they just took the highest stock #. I'd say 10hp (just a few percent) is probably within the error bars for that test.

I had a DIY DCI and now have an AFE, so I'm being just as critical of myself as anyone.

What is on the pro BMW race cars? Even something like in the ST class? Couldn't find a pic of one.

Looking to race cars for ideas may not be smart unless you are intended to build a trailer queen or dedicated weekend racer. Some race cars will have little more than a mesh screen over the turbo inlet, but you don't want to do that on an engine you're not rebuilding every few races. Racecars don't have to worry too much about what happens when you sit in traffic, crankcase venting, etc.
