What Is The Best Synthetic High Performance Engine Oil For 1 Series?
Hi,
I recently purchased a 1 series and I'm looking to replace the oil filter and do a oil change this weekend. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia and the average temperature currently is about 10 degrees Celsius. The weather will get colder within the next few months and could dip to near minus. Would it be a safe bet to go with 5W30 over 0W30/0W40? What is the best synthetic oil for the 1 series with the current climate I'm in? What has been your go to motor oil and how has your experience been with it? I'd like to hear your inputs! Thanks! |

The list of LL-01 approved oils is getting shorter. Personally, I use Pennzoil Euro 5W40 year round in my cars (picked up at CTC for $16/5L jug). At the dealer we use 0W30 in these cars.

I've decided to go with the Castrol EDGE 5W30 for now since it's LL-01 approved. It seems to be working great so far. I've done a bit more research on the Pennzoil Euro 5W40 and it does have really good reviews. I'll definitely give this a try on my next oil change. How would you say then Pennzoil Euro 5W40 compare to the Mobil 1 0W40?

Been using 0-40 German Castrol. Seems to have lost it's LL01 rating lately. Also doesn't go on sale at CTC anymore. Loss of it's rating probably has nothing to do with the oil itself. Anyway, seeing your post has made me look at the Pennzoil Euro 5/40. It has the LL01 rating and see it currently on sale at CTC at 1/2 price!, something less than $29./ 5 ltr. jug. (I'm guessing your $16./ 5 ltr. was a misprint). Never considered a non-European oil before. Was looking at Motul 0/40 8100XMax but the price difference is huge and I'm wondering if it's worth it Next day: Just back from the store with 3x 5 ltr. jugs of 5/40 Euro. Did some reading. Seems this oil is sold as Shell Helix in Europe although Shell says it's not absolutely identical due to regional requirements. Very highly rated. A LL01 approved synthetic at $6./litre compared to the $15./litre for oils I was looking at turned out to be a no-brainer.

I mention brave, because it's possible they'll either tell you it was an error and cancel your order, or they'll send you just one 5L container and then you'll have to spend some time fighting your case that the listing was for a 4 pack, etc. In case anyone is interested: https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B004XBHHY4 |
