The Boss 302 will sticker for around $36-40k. That is 135i money not 1M money. I think a base GT500 will be closer to the sticker price of the 1M. At that point, a performance comparison would have to be scored on the merits of "feel" and "refinement" and "cachet" because the 1M won't even be close to the GT500 in any real measures of performance. There is absolutely no way. The Boss will prob start at 40k. Thats only a 6k premium over a stock GT. You're looking at least 9k+ for the hardware you're getting

All the estimates I saw say $36k for Boss and $40k for Laguna Seca Edition.

I agree with a 40k price tag for the Boss. A loaded out GT is 40k, can't see a Boss going for less than 40k.

Interesting, the GT500 vs Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. This was done by Road and Track

Its probably a issue of hooking up, because the GT500 did roughly 4.2-4.3 in MotorTrend's hands, and the CTS-V Coupe apparently did 3.7 sec as well

What I see is that the Boss 302 is on the GT500's heels, almost the same, so how can they justify the price and the "mystique" of a Shelby (built by SVT) with 550 hp, and the 302 gets similar results with 110 hp less...
Seems like Ford made the Mustang too good

What things about the GT did you not like (I've never driven one)?

My neighbor has a 2008 mustang bullitt. http://cae2k.com/add-photos-to-comme...g-bullitt.html The car is visually appealing.
The exhaust sound is amazing, but the ride/drive would make it a no buy for a BMW driver.

The 2011 GT has many curves, angles, and unappealing visuals. I did not drive the car, because I could not get past the exterior/interior look.

Now I was in town yesterday and red 135i/sports passes by, and I said to myself, wow, I cannot wait for the 1M.

Re: Motor Trend test
Edmunds tested that same M3 and commented that the tires on that particular car, Continentals, had noticeably lower grip than the PS2's that the press M3's normally have.

As to the Mustang closing the gap, this is not necessarily new. Back in the day, the old 5.0 would romp the E30 M3 in a straight line and wasn't exactly a slouch on the road course either, beating the likes of the Celica All-Trac Turbo and Eagle Talon TSi in same-day testing. It cost a bit over $12k vs $35k for the M3.

A stoplight scenario is a likely encounter between these two cars, in which case it looks like driver skill could be the deciding factor.
Another likely encounter is a highway pull, and I'm pretty sure the M3 would walk the Mustang.

Should the M3 really be noticeably faster than the Mustang on track? That would put it in Z06/R8 territory, wouldn't it? Ask yourself if that sounds realistic for a premium-marque 4-seater with 414 hp starting at around $60k.
Factor in the engineering to excel in esoteric areas of subjective performance (feedback and superior motion control), the higher feature content of the M3 (telescoping steering wheel, side curtain airbags, etc), build quality and materials, engineering to meet RHD markets, transportation and import fees, currency values (1 euro is currently $1.27US), massive differences in production volume, and then you'll see the Mustang's performance/$ isn't amazing. It's totally expected.

1M vs M3: Not so sure the 1er will necessarily be faster. The shorter wheelbase may be a liability in terms of high-speed stability. As a niche vehicle within an already niche segment, I don't see it as much of a competitor to the GT500 (limited to 5500 units for 2011). Some will cross-shop for sure, but the overall markets will be quite different.

I agree. As great as the performance is, the look of the mustang is terrible. Its a huge beast with dated (they call it heritage) styling. To each his own.

If you get the manual 5.0 with 3.73 axle it's tough to beat the fun factor around town.

On the highway though, the 135i is flat out amazing with N54 roll on power, nimbleness, and effortless performance!

The GT Premium without X or A plan is $32k. I'm guessing BOSS @ $38k. Reading here that 1M could be upwards of $55k!
