1M attempted theft - technical help please

Hi guys. My 1M has had its side window put through. The maggots got as far as removing the OBD cover but were disturbed. Anyway, the alarm obviously triggered.

It's dark right now so I can't fumble around inside. My immediate issue is that the car is completely unresponsive to the remote key. I had to use the steel key blade to unlock the door. No key recognition, even when plugged into the dash. Seemingly immobilised. No access to the boot [trunk] etc. Any help is hugely appreciated!

On a personal note I'm naturally upset but it appears there isn't a mark on the car. Just a whole heap of glass inside, but that can be cleared out (seats out and door stripped??). If they hadn't have been disturbed I might have lost my irreplaceable 1M. I dodged a bullet this time :thump:

Anyway, I hope someone can help with my technical question.

Cheers

Was it stored outside? If yes, then get it inside somewhere, if you can.

Presumably the thieves were partway through stealing it which involved some reprogramming. I'm sure you dealer can fix that, and the window as well. If you have been storing it outside, find a secure inside place to keep it going forward.

Hopefully your insurance will cover most of your loss.

Yeah it was outside at the time. The issue is that I can't start the car so can't move it. I'm currently failing at Google, and my dealer doesn't open for another 5+ hours. Worst case I can get the car recovered to them.

There is a thread on the 5 forum about a stolen car where they used OBD port to get a code to program a key and drive the car.

Probably why yours doesn't work......

I will see if I can find thread.

Sleep in it or call a tow truck and get it to the nearest towing lot for security until the shop opens

Glad you still have the car BMW will recode it.

It might be worth moving the OBD if the car has to live outside.

can i ask where in the uk you are ?

Yeah the car has extended comprehensive cover. It's normally based in the south but was away from home on this occasion.

BMW are coming out in about thirty minutes. There is no life from it besides the alarm if I lean in.

Hello Les (I recognise the name from a certain RS forum ).

Really sorry to hear about this attempted theft - I guess the good news is at least they didn't get it.

It sounds as though you're getting it recovered to a BMW dealer which is what I'd suggest.

Did you have the software security updates done previously? I believe those updates make it so BMW can only programme a new key, so I'm wondering if their attempt has locked the car down?

Best of luck and I hope you get it sorted quickly.

Yes indeed. The very same Les!

Yeah the car has been taken away to the nearest BMW dealer. I'm not expecting to hear much today though. I didn't own it from new, but I have previously been told that it's had the update.

Sorry to hear, but it sounds like you at least lucked out.

How do people determine if they have the updated software which prevents the key programming/cloning?

Have the car towed to your dealer. Your insurance should cover the towing fee.

Have your dealer update the car's sw to only allow YOUR key fobs. That way in the future, even IF they break in again... they can not erase your key fobs and program their new key. You got lucky... they were very close to getting your ///M.

Thanks for help and input, guys. the car is with the dealer now and I'm waiting on more info.

The good news for me is that the car will not ever be stored/kept/left at that location ever again. If they return, they're not going to find my 1M, let alone try to steal it.

Glad you still have it.
It would be irreplaceable if you have had it from new.

The good news is that you still got your car.

Only for cars with comfort access Regular keys will not transmit anything untill a button is pressed.
