The theory behind a vented hood is to allow engine bay heat out. Generally speaking heat has always been equal to bad. My son's Evo has them and his engine compartment cools down way faster than mine. Most notable when stopped, you can see the heat escaping. To work while driving the hood needs to be designed to create a negative pressure zone so that the air flowing over the hood helps pull the heat out. The negative point that typically arises in such conversation is water getting in. IN the case of my son's Evo, it has vented plates underneath to limit water entry. We removed these days one so they could perform at 100%.

Vents in the hood are for beginners. Here in AZ people drive around with no hood to really boost performance.

The only reason I could see it be slightly bad is for downforce. Hot air ontop on the car will create a low pressure zone which will cause lift...but were talking basically minuscule numbers here

Maybe creating unwanted air pressure in the bay i dont know im not an engineer you tell me. That's why I'm asking.

1. If the negative outweighed the positive then race teams wouldn't use them.
2. Cooling at rest is definitely faster, I know this from firsthand experience...went to two separate track days before and after my CF hood...with very close air/on-track temps both days....without the CF hood, I needed to raise the hood in between sessions to check temps in check...with the CF hood I maintained the same temps with the hood closed as I did with non-CF hood open... 3. It just looks cooler! (c'mon Mr. JDM ). |

although i tend to do outrageous/very controversial things to my car, i still want to be somewhat functional. who knows, for all I know I might already have a vented hood laying around somewhere... just have to figure out where I tossed it

Any have any pics of a vented hood on the 1er? I honestly don't think it would look to good on this car at all. It would look way to JDM for my liking. But for performance, I believe it would help out more than hurt you. There would be a better airflow to the intakes (if you upgraded the stock one) and good for air circulation in the bay. But as far as looks not so much, this car is way too beautiful to be "ricing" out.

You know Im actually kind of warming up more to the Vors hood over the ICarbon tbh. I mean I know for a fact theres a shitload of heat that builds up in that frontal area where the flat escape vent is, that sits right above where the radiator is and the heat from atleast one of the turbos, etc.
Also wondering if the rear vents are functional on that? And also, ive seen discussion as to the need for pins on the ICarbon hoods, is this the same for the Vors hoods? Cuz I know those hoods are pushing $1400 for single layer CF Main reason that keeps me from a hood mod is wtf am i gonna do with my oem hood..Just keep the huge thing sitting in my garage all wrapped up taking up space? Fuck no, and shipping it im sure would be horrendous. Just dont know.. |

^^^All the vents on the Vorsteiner are funtional for letting heat escape! You WILL need hood pins....I drove without them for 4-5 months and got tired of my hood "lifting" during long highway trips (lots of people flagging me down to tell me my hood was "unlatched" when it wasnt). Not to mention I got tired of taping it down at track days......

I wish Vors gave pins as an added option to have them install em in the hood. I REALLY dont wanna buy a $1400 CF hood and then have a shop cut out holes for pins...Id rather Vors do it specific for the 1er and install the pins pre-shipment. Then I just hafta drill the install points in the bay ya?

^^^I understand your point....do you have any race shops in your area? They should be very experience with hood pins if there are.

Yes I will when I move to NC, I just think for a hood that pretty much NEEDS the pins, wtf dont they just offer it as an installed option, it would make things ALOT easier and then its under their guarantee that it fits the 1er perfectly, rather than having a shop do it and deal with their guarantee instead.

not everyone may want the same style of pins or same location...it is better to just let the consumer decide and provide the base product at least IMHO....

If done properly a vented hood will help tremendously with cooling and aerodynamic download on the front end of the car. Like all things the key is to do it correctly. Some of the vented hoods I see will make your engine bay hotter and create more lift.
