General Exclaim UHP vs Dunlop Direzza Star Spec
Almost time to swap out the run flats. I am debating between General Exclaim UHP and Dunlop Direzza Star Spec. The Star Spec's are a proven product around here but cost a few hundred more than the Exclaim's, which are getting pretty positive reviews elsewhere. Both tires are available in the sizes I want: 235/40/18 F, 255/35/18 R, so that is not a difference maker. Anyone have any experience with the Exclaim's or able to offer up some good info?
Thanks! |

Kind of like comparing a Corvette to a Cobalt. I have a set of the UHPs on my wife's car and they've done well, but they are not performance tires. I expected them to get very noisy, but they haven't. Better tires at everything than the Goodyear RSAs that came on the car, but if you are looking for performance go for the Dunlops. Much stiffer sidewalls, larger tread blocks, stickier compound, etc. They won't ride as well, and probably won't last as long, but it is all about your priorities.

Go with the Dunlops. A friend had General Exclaim UHP's on His E46 M3 and always bloated on how great they were until we went to the track. They have the grip of a piece of butter on a hot skillet. Yes they are quiet and long lasting, but if you plan on doing any kind of performance driving events, they are not the tire to have.
best of luck.

I am on my 2nd set of the generals. I track about 4 times a year and these are great tires. Need to play with the tire pressures alittle because they tend to have softer side walls so a couple extra psi wont hurt.
Overall i wont use any thing else because nothing can touch the price to performance ratio. Oh and they rock in the wet which is also important to me! |

I have star specs on one car, UHPs on the other. The UHPs are utter garbage. They do nothing well, but do lots of things mediocre. The Direzzas are better in the dry and rain, but many orders of magnitude.. like not even close.
UHPs are better in... hmm.. lemme think.. Oh yeah. They have a M&S rating, which the Star Specs do not. So the UHPs are better in the snow. Do not get the UHPs, please. They are loud, and turn your car into one with stock Hyundai Excel levels of grip. They are cheap though, and last for a long time, but they are garbage... unless, of course, you're looking to get 60k miles out of your tires, at the expense of turning your car into a huge compromise for a few years. |

Alternative to both would be the Hankook V12. I have them and they are really good.

Definitely a big difference between the UHP's and the Z1's... What do you plan on doing wit the vehicle? The UHP's are a great all around bang for the buck tire if you plan on doing a lot of driving. The Z1's are a sticky street tire that handles extremely well under track conditions or spirited driving, but unfortunately do have a lower tread wear.

I do a couple track events each year both other than that its mostly highway miles. I'm very easy on the tires on the street (runflats lasted 20k miles with 2 track events, and I'm not a slow driver on the track haha), so I think I'll get decent life out of the Dunlops even with a couple track events. Thanks for the help guys. Dunlops it is.
A coworker of mine got the UHP's for his Vette and couldn't stop praising them. Almost had me sold, but I think he's just naive. haha |

The Dunlops are already the best bang for the buck in comparison to Michelin PS2s which are hundreds more than the Dunlops. Going any cheaper will get you less tire. Go with the Dunlops.

Both are 2nd or 3rd tier? I've never heard anything bad about the Dunlops ever, and seem to be one of the best tires for track-work this side of R-comps. I have heard really good things about the RE-11 as well, but usually more praise about the Dunlops. Which tires do you recommend?

If you want a good tire but you're a cheap shit get the Yokohama sDrive, better grip than the sumitomo HTRZ3, DZ101 and Hankook V12 Evo, but they're a little on the loud side.
