Will 225/50r/17 dunlop m3 winter tires work?
Spoke with tire rack and they said I'm about 1/2 inch bottom and 1/2 inch top to big. He said overall winter size tire is 25 inches and I'm at 26 inches. He thinks it'll work and it's pretty close. What do you guys think? I want to avoid rubbing at all possible.

I run 205/50HR17's on 7jx17 wheels. You really do not want a wide tire for snow duty. the skinnier and taller the sidewall the better. That said... I wonder how wide of a wheel you intend to use with those 225's? Plus you know with 225's your speedo will read slower than you actual speed.

225/50/17 is too tall of a tire and it will most likely cause rubbing issues during compression. The tire will be be a little over 3% of what is recommended from the OE size.

I'm using 225/45/17 Blizzak snows on my 135 and they work fine. I'm in Buffalo, NY, so I don't see a lot of heavy snow on the roads (they know how to keep them plowed around here). I'm not a fan of the "squishy" feel of tall, narrow snow tires, so this size works well in light snow and damp/dry road conditions.

btw i went with 225/40/18 all around on my stock wheels for winter because i had no money for new wheels.
i'm concerned about the fact that the rear tires are really stretched and offer the wheel no protection.. if i slide a little bit and hit a curb the rear wheel would be the first thing to hit it, not the tires. also, it's kind of weird driving with 225s on the back actually... i seem to have trouble getting power down, it's like the rear of the car kind of lifts up a little bit and gets wobbly.. i can't imagine driving that 300hp engine on 205 rear tires, must be miserable. at least here where i am, where the roads are clear 99% of the time... |

My snows are on 17x8 wheels that I kept when I sold my 330i. I have no idea what the offset is. I haven't had an opportunity to push the car or load it up yet, but there's no rubbing in normal driving.

225/45-17 Dunlop Winter Sport 3D would be the best solution as opposed to Winter Sport M3 in 225/50-17 size. There is a Winter Sport M3 ROF (run flat) in 225/45-17 from Tire Rack, though.

I have 225/50 17's, I think they're on 17 x8's.
As DKNY said, they rub slightly on sharp turns and on heavy loads/big dips in the road. When these wear out, I'll most likely get 225/45 on the same rims. I've been searching and I haven't seen anyone have issues with rubbing. I may go with 215/45, but I like to have a wider tire since it doesn't snow too often here. |
