135i ticking noise

Hello all!

My car is stored for the winter in my garage and i start it up every once in a while just to let everything flow while its not being driven all season. I noticed a noise i don't recall being present last summer, or for the matter of fact last time i started my car a couple of weeks ago. Car hasnt gone anywhere all winter! I have uploaded a short video to youtube where you can hear the noise for yourself and maybe identify what it is. I might just be paranoid and its nothing wrong at all; im just not sure what it could possibly be... any thoughts?

I heard a similar ticking sound a week ago when pulling into my driveway. It was louder than the normal ticking from the direct injection. When I opened the hood, it sounded like the ticking was coming from the oil filer housing. The ticking went away after a couple minutes of idling. I haven't heard the same ticking since, but the car threw a LPFP Sensor code. The LPFP sensor is tucked back behind the oil filter housing so I that's my guess.

Had this exactly same ticking on my previous 135i. My SA said it's normal but I doubted. I didn't have a chance to find out what really caused this ticking noise before I traded it in. Keep us posted if you find out what the source is. Hopefully it's not something serious.

Did anyone here check it out at the dealership and get a response as to what is it?

Was there a problem with it? Did the dealer mention anything when you brought it in?

My SA said the sound was normal and it will go away after the car is fully warmed up. Sometimes the sound went away after fully warm up and sometimes it didn't. It was more obvious during winter. I didn't usually bring my car to the nearest dealer by the time I got to my dealer, the car was fully warmed up and there was no ticking sound. So it was not easy for them to trace. It was my only DD and the 2 dealerships I usually brought my car to didn't offer free courtesy car service. So I didn't get a chance to leave my car with them long enough to troubleshoot.

So do you hear that sound all the time?

Perhaps the sound becomes obvious during colder months. I rarely hear it in the summer.

I have a 2010 n54 and I don't have this noise, but listening to it on your vid your SA should be able to trace it easily??

Before I check youtube, I thought the noise is about a typical direct injector tickling noise, but it sounds bit different.

I noticed this the other day when changing my plugs. Drove around without the engine bay cover or anything like that on after swapping them out.. after putting it all back on, it was gone. I'm assuming that's why BMW has all the foam in the cover? Either way. You're in a garage, so all I can say is that sounds like an Echo of something they know makes noise.

I had this same exact ticking during a trip to the NC Carolina Auto Expo. This was shortly after I had my spark plugs changed. The one and only time it happened. The ticking would go away with any sort of push on the accelerator.

Hasn't happened since. I've heard its intermittent and fairly normal on our N54s.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I'm getting kind of the same noise. Worried it's the wastegates, probably not; but just looking for ideas.

The noise is occurring at idle (manual here), doesn't matter if neutral, clutch in, or in gear and clutch in. The ticking is there. Opening the hood, neutral gear (of course), it's coming from the left side of the engine (passenger side for us in the US). From what I've read, it could be a wastegate issue, it could be a direct injection issue, but I'm fairly certain it's not a clutch issue.

Anyway to tell with more certainty if what I'm hearing is a wastegate issue?

Hey all,

I actually never ended up checking this out, but 4 years later and my car still runs fine- the sound must be normal.

dude, starting it up and just letting it idle uselessly without being driven is literally one of the worst things you can do for your car. you are causing more damage then just leaving it alone for a season.

install a battery charger and leave the damn thing alone!

The car IS hooked up to a battery charger... i would think that starting it up once in a while to keep fluids running would be okay once every 1-2 months

I realize the thread is very old but I have the identical sound on my car too, except N55. Not sure what it is but it’s more prominent when the engine is cold.
