The other oft spouted nonsense is "it's now on the same level as the exotics that cost 3-4x the price". Again, same exact thing said & published by every car mag every generation. Same exact thing said by Mark Reuss the GM VP when they launch the new Z06/ZR1.

Pull up Car & Driver review for the 2006 Z06, 2015 Z06, 2023 Z06. Basically the exact same review each time. But Corvette owners eat it up bc the vast majority are magazine racers.

The new Chief Engineer of Corvette was quoted in an article about the new ZR1 saying "we know our customers aren't going to use this level of performance and only care about bragging rights" - very true
100%. This applies to other cars too though. Reality is, these cars whether 911, Corvette, Maserati, BMW, whatever... They're all largely bought by people that have way more money than anything else. Occasionally you'll get the guy who sold his company and wanted to go racing, but reality is unless you have FU money nobody wants to take a total loss on a $100k+ car on the track. Sure you could get track insurance and all that, but that adds more and more cost.

Reality is, all these cars are way beyond what the average driver can handle. I get blasted all the time for saying that anything C5Z or newer doesn't need track mods until people have a lot of track experience under their belts. Modern cars are just so damn fast and.capable down, you're so ply not gonna hit their limits as the average enthusiast. And frankly, as prices go up, the odds of those people having the skills and abilities to actually use them goes way down. They're focusing their energy on careers and businesses, not spending the weekends going to every track day and autocross they can find

The truth of the matter is that the number of people who track a car is a rounding error.

Yep, which is mind boggling considering how much money and time gets devoted to developing track focused versions and getting the fastest ring times they can, which ruins the car for the road.

Damnit now I sound like James May.

I don't think every one of these cars ruins it for the road, I think you have to read between the lines though, because the "reviewers" will paint rosy unrealistic pictures and the owners will rationalize it till they dump the car.

Porsche stuff like NON RS and even the Z06 and those sort get accolades for their road-manners, while others that I won't name get blasted for the same and you can usually see that they just applied the "shotgun approach" to try and eek out a slightly faster time.

I agree in theory, but I think it's all a lot more nuanced.

More than anything, people want something exclusive and they will pay for it. As long as the market allows for that, people will do it. A Taco is exclusive when there aren't many available. I was in the market for a truck about the time they were a few months out and yeah, it was insanity. You'll be in an exclusive group for a little while if you are one of the first...but that'll wear off. That type of person will find something new to be exclusive with, maybe another new car, new house, etc.

Fortunately, even a small part of a large market can be worth catering to, so long as those buyers are willing to spend the premium it costs them. We're never going to have 25 options for these cars, but at least we're going to have 10 (or whatever).

True now for manual transmission cars. Has to be an "M", or a "V", or a "AMG", and the tax that comes with it.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
