Wife and I have been canoeing and kayaking a lot lately, so decided to bring Ripley (1/2 bischon, 1/2 shih tzu) for a paddle. Knowing he's not a lab or retriever, I did not think he would be petrified. He was having none of it. No action shot, as I was trying not to have him flip us. The ride home.. He liked that much better...

3-hour ER visit with Winston last night. Good news is no ulcer or scratches. Looks like shampoo got in his eye. Should recover in a few days.

Cute, as always...

You'd think dog shampoo would have a "no more tears" option.

Sadly today we said goodbye to Anja, alias "Chippy". She was about 16 years old which is old for a GSD. She was a breeding dog for the Amish until she was no longer deemed useful and we ended up adopting her. The Amish breeders around here usually don't go as far as actually putting their used dogs up for adoption so we were lucky they surrendered her to a local shelter. Her retirement was fabulous, for 6+ years she was able to run free, eat well, go on vacations, too many car rides to list, play with 3 great siblings, and get the best medical treatment available to stay healthy and live a long productive life. She basically had two beds, an Italian leather armchair, and a doggie door with the run of the yard. Her favorite spot was a small beach on a nearby lake that she would soak in as long as there wasn't ice on it.

Not to be outdone by Winston's ER visit posted above, Ginger woke us up at 2:30 a.m. vomiting. She vomited 5 more times by 11 a.m. so I decided we needed to go to the doggie ER. She got out of surgery about an hour ago to remove an acorn that was blocking her intestines. Probably won't be able to bring her home until Saturday or Sunday.

She loves to pick up anything she sees on the ground and we go to great lengths to stop her. She is the only one of the 4 cavaliers we have/had that we could not train to stop doing this and it unfortunately caught up with her/us today. We have 2 large live oaks in front of our house that have been shedding acorns for close to 2 months. I use the blower to clean up the driveway daily. But she managed to snatch one up and that's all it took.

As a PSA if anyone is unaware, acorns can be toxic if eaten in quantity and can cause digestive system blockages that can have serious consequences, especially for small dogs. Ginger should make a full recovery but it has been a helluva day (when I should also busy with work). She will be in a cone for up to two weeks while she recovers from surgery and I will be about $10K poorer (hoping for 1/2 that after pet insurance but we'll see). Doctor said she should fully recover, thankfully.
