New laws here mandating plates, a drivers license, and finally use on roads requires ability to maintain speed with traffic.

Haven't seen one of these pointless things on surface roads here since.

Lol... they were probably driving the course level cart. The new DOT compliant ones are totally different. My local speed limit is 25 in the Summer, 35 in the off season. The new Carts easily reach and maintain that.

If you're interested, here's a simple map that puts what state allows carts on the road:

https://golfcartsearch.com/golf-cart-laws
Green state = carts/LSVs are road-legal
Red = not legal
Hover over a state to see the max speed, minimum driver age, and a link to the exact statute

If I had to pick a death trap on the road I'd rather ride a motorcycle.

What's the point of a golf cart? It's redundant. If you want a small car buy a small car.

Circular argument though with someone who's wasted money on one and needs to justify it.

Your choice. Do you live by the beach? I do. The benefit of a golf cart is ease of getting around when the crowds are heavy. Plus it's an outdoors thing. A Cool thing to have. You can find parking anywhere when hopping from place to place. Don't knock it until you try it.
