Look, I would LOVE to see the 5-popper Golf become reality, hell I’d buy one in a heartbeat. But the odds are zero that it ever sees the light of day.
I think you're half right. I think VW builds it. But it won't come to the US market. VWG has a knack of dickteasing us here. They did it with the RS3 Competition. Also, the Facelifted RS3 audi teased us with a year ago had bucket seats. It's on sale now and you can't get them here. Come on man.

What car is as fast, holds 5 people, has AWD, decent fuel economy, decent build quality, and all that as a package? And don't say an EV because that's a whole different setup.

A Golf doesn't hold five people, unless they are three little kids in the back. I had people in the back of my R and GTI many times, it is tight with two adults back there. Plus, if the people in front of you are tall, there is basically no leg room.

I don't think AWD needs to be a part of that, as some RWD cars fit the bill.

But, just off the top of my head here are a few that would be great choices: The M3 of course, Plus a bunch of AMG's like the C43, C63, E53, CLA45, CLE53, GT43, GT53, GT63. Plus a couple Cadillacs, the CT4 and CT5 Blackwing. There are others, those just came to me from car shopping.

I would never pick an EV, I despise them.

Again, not knocking the RS3, or any Golf with that engine that may come...just giving my opinion.
Heck, if they could make a 5 cylinder Golf for under $50K I'd buy it.

That's fair - the only people.I'd put in the back are in fact my little kids, lol

AWD is a must for many people, whether for snow or rain. That said, most of the cars you mentioned fit the bill... For more money. That's the real value prop here, you're getting a car that does everything these $75-150k cars do for a lot less money. Even if the Golf R25 (that's my personal name for it) was $60k, all the competition is vastly more money, and the only things that it would undercut it on price would be the regular Golf R, the GR Corolla, the WRX, which all have much less power. Arguably an M240i presents a competitor, but it's a small coupe in the US, maybe an M340i, but again that's a sedan only here. You have to get like an X3 M40i to get the same.mix of practicality (or suffer in the new X3 M50i like a fool).

Got me thinking...

I wish we had an M340i wagon here, I would buy that for sure. Would be a good sweet spot. BMW said "Americans don't like wagons like the rest of the world". Well, that has recently been proven to be wrong, as the M5 has sold more in wagon form than sedan form here since arriving. Plus the same thing for Audi wagons. So maybe we will see more wagons here in the future.

Same for hot hatches, I love them...I have had like five. Yes, we do get some here, but man there are so many cool ones over in Europe and such. They offer a great blend of fun, practicality, sizing, etc, etc. Plus, I think they look cool.

E53 AMG Wagon just got announced, too, at a substantially less price than the M5 and RS6.

I'm not big on the G8x styling, but after seeing several G81 M3s... Man that was sharp.

Gimme all the wagons! M340i wagon would be a perfect, PERFECT daily.

For sure, and way better than an SUV!

E53 AMG wagon is a neat idea. But those numbers are a disappointment. Expected to start at $90k, and it's not any faster than my 21 X5 M50i. Probably will weigh as much or more than it too. It's a neat idea, but I just can't really get excited about it. Maybe it'll be a lot faster than MB is saying and that will make it better?

I dunno I think I'd rather a faster and more spacious SUV and let them have the slight dynamics advantage.
