OEM Resonator Size?
If anyone is out working on their car soon, would you mind taking a tape measure to the stock resonator and getting some dimensions for me?
I'm looking at replacing mine with a Borla ProXS at 19"x4"x9.5", assuming that it's bigger (and thus presumably quieter). I would measure myself but I'm currently deployed and won't be home for a while longer.

Just my opinion, but I would leave the stock resonator in place and change the muffler...you might want to think twice about using the ProSX, they have a flap that opens under pressure, which I don't really like, and should really be back where the muffler would go, not where the resonator is. I just picked a Borla 400496; it's a straight-thru stainless muffler, no fiberglass, with 2.5" centered openings and a 14" long, 4" x 9" oval body; which will fit perfectly where the stock muffler goes, and it's only 90 bucks. Pretty sure this will quiet down the headers without robbing the HP that the headers added. FYI, I'm not getting a CEL from the headers, at least not yet.

Thanks! The Borla is about 1/3 bigger then, by cubic inches. Might be just what I'm looking for.

Also, I'm confused what people mean when they say muffler and resonator, because they seem to be used interchangeably sometimes. When I changed out my stock exhaust for the BMW PE, it changed out what I call the muffler (with the tailpipes coming out of it). A little further up (section 2) there is what I'm calling the resonator (but what RealOEM calls the "front muffler"). This is a straight-through piece in a very similar shape to the Borla universal mufflers. I can see how a Borla would "fit perfectly" there, but I don't see how it could be fitted in place of the BMW PE. Can you clarify please? EDIT: To add to the confusion, here's what Borla has to say about their universal mufflers (of which the ProXS is one): "For custom needs, BORLA® offers universal mufflers (also called resonators)." Given that Borla calls this part a resonator and a muffler, and BMW calls their resonator a muffler, and the two units are dimensionally similar - I think it's worth a shot.

Yeah that's my bad...the ProSX is straight thru, with stainless and ceramic stuffing, not fiberglass...it does NOT have a baffle plate that opens under pressure...that baffle plate might be on certain cat-back systems...it's not on individual mufflers.
I'll know for sure tomorrow when the muffler shows up.

Just took the car for a spin with the Borla muffler...fantastic, throaty, sounds elegant, like a 911 with stock exhaust...
Here's the history of my exhaust sound: Stock - too quiet, can't hear anything. Stock, muffler removed - decent sound, not too loud, a little too much gurgling, a little bit too "high school". Headers, no muffler, only cats and resonator - idle's okay but everything else is bad...goes from harsh to unbearable; sounds like a track car, a loud one. Headers, cats, resonator, and Borla muffler - perfect, elegant, sounds expensive, but never overbearing...love it. And still no CEL...great headers for under $1000. Next weekend the DISA goes on, then up to Eurowerke, an AA dealer, for a re-flash.

I've gotten a few PM's asking about the Borla muffler...so here's a pic; it's lightened so you can see the pipe better.
The muffler sits at about 45 degrees...you need 2 short 2.5" pipes, both curved; one to the left/outboard connects to the muffler, one to the right/inboard, attaches to the dual-tip. Cut the support off the muffler and weld it to the dual-tip. Ahhhh, the sweet sound of Borla without the shocking price of a cat-back! BTW, that hemi Durango in the background has a Borla cat-back with over 100,000 miles on it...and it still has that sweet, subtle NASCAR sound....

Thanks for the pic! I think this might be the way to go. Just so much cheaper than a dedicated muffler. And honestly, the only other option I'd consider that is quieter than my BMW PE is the Supersprint muffler at nearly $1200. And Borla has a great reputation for quality and an "OEM+" sound. Will update this thread with install pics and impressions if/when it happens.
