If I do a JB+ or a JB3 what will that do to the longevity of my engine?
Decrease it of course.

Anytime you add more stress and heat to mechanical components, you shorten their service life. Is it worth it? You decide.

In theory you are correct, but the real unanswered question is the marginal effect of the booster systems.

I'd opine that rigorous maintenance (the old BMW schedule) would provide more life than any tune within the components capabilities (JB+ / JB<7) would take away.

Maybe, but then one could go a step further and say that rigorous maintenance and NO tune would extend life still further...

True dat.

But that same logic would have me eating bran for breakfast, cutting out all alcohol and getting at least 10 hours sleep per night, every night. And what fun would that be?

Take care of your car/body within reason and you can push it a bit more. Balance is the key to life.

Agree with that totally.

However, in response to the question " will running a tune shorten my engine's life expectancy?', there is only one answer.

Whether it's worth it or not is totally up to the individual. Apparently a lot of people think so...

BMW Service Advisor
Concerning Turbo Lag due to recall of HPFP and Computer Reflash

Per Katherine's voice mail:

"BMW with the programming recall, has actually, um, done some modifications there, because of the throttle being too high, um, on these turbo engines. So, that's actually normal."

So, BMW fixed that problem with a program to "design in" a normal defect. ;-)

No "JOY." No "Ultimate..."

Jb4 or Jb+ is an excellent way to add power. It could decrease the longetivety of the turbos, and probably will. Wastage's will develop rattle and oil seals will go faster. As far as engine there should be no problems. You will need to replace spark plugs and coil packs more often, but thats wear and tear. Good luck.
