Totally confused about "M" designatinons
Okay you experts out there, BMW now uses the "M" label quite liberally, so my question is this. For the new cars, how do I know what has "M" parts and what is a true "M" car?

https://www.cartelligent.com/blog/un...ng-conventions "M Models – A high-performance version of many BMW models is grouped into the M Models (e.g. the M3 is a high-performance version of the 3 Series sedan)." Vs. "M Sport Line – In addition to the M Models discussed above, BMW also offers an M Sport Line on select vehicles. This adds features such as M wheels, an M steering wheel, a sports instrument cluster and an M aerodynamic kit. The M Sport Line also adds unique color choices to certain models."

The VIN is the easiest tell. If it starts with WBS, 5UM, or 5YM, it was a car built by BMW M. As always, there are oddball historical exceptions, but this is a good rule for cars currently being produced.
BMW M: WBS 5UM 5YM Standard BMW: WBA 5UX You will find that all the M Performance products have VINs that start with WBA or 5UX. |

Really, if you are looking for an engaging and fun to drive, modern production car, look elsewhere.

However, I'm holding out hope that the upcoming 2020 M2cs will be something special and hopefully a return to form. Only time will tell tho??? |

The same could unfortunately be said about most modern cars. Porsche is still doing ok, although the 911 is getting too big. I'm not sure there's a single modern car I'd trade my car for, and I only have a modded 135i, let alone a 1M.

The new cars, all of them, are "soul-less." Some of them, especially the "M" cars as opposed to "M-badge decorated cars" are fast, and would probably be good on the track. What they are not, for the most part, is fun to drive.

If I was looking for another new car, which I most definitely am NOT, I'd have a look at the current Cayman and at the Miata, assuming I didn't need anything very functional. After that you start talking about Subarus, heaven help us.
