Drive your car
All this recent talk about high values. And for sale ads touting never seeing rain, or keeping the miles down, or hermetically sealed bubble chamber storage,... inspired me to post up.
The 1M is special to me because it is as much, or even more fun to drive as a many sports cars. But - is still a BMW. It's practical, and dependable (for me at least). And serves my responsibilities, and passions. In one car. I can take my boys to school twice a week. Take 'em to the beach. Drive to work every day. Haul my hockey gear to games. Take my wife out to a nice dinner. Tear up Laguna Seca and back roads. Hoon it up on occasion,.... It helps me live life the way I like it. But, it happens to be rare. Please, don't let that last bit dictate what you do w/ your 1M. Live life. Drive you car. Share it with the monkeys in your life - shit - let 'em chew gum in the back seat (it's best to give them a time limit), don't freak out if they get some sand on your carpet. And if you have to pass up an hour at the car wash for an hour at the park, then GREAT! Live well, drive well. Last edited by Mahlzeit; 04-18-2014 at 11:00 AM.. |

Damn straight - one of the most intelligent posts I have seen on this forum. My 1M is my dd, rain or shine. She takes me to work, the gym, and everywhere else, about 50 miles a day. I love each and every one that ticks off the odometer.
Great pics of a nice car and beautiful family - best to you. |

I'm thinking of doing a transcontinental road trip this time... The blue ridge and the PCH and everything in between! That's a lot of national parks and awesome, awesome roads!
I love driving my car. |

My car is at 4966 miles, of which 726 were driven in the fatherland on European Delivery. I only drive my car on Sunny days, keep it in the garage with a car cover on it when not driving the car. I take great pride on keeping it as new looking at I can. I drive the car when I want to and love the feeling of this car. It is such a drivers car that goes and handles like stink.
Best damn BMW I have ever owned in over 40 years of owning BMW's. I will never sell the car, it will always look it's best and I love it that way. The great thing about this is that you can drive and keep your car the way you like and I'll do the same resulting in both of us loving this great BMW. I also have a 1988 e30 M3 with 70K miles that I drive and keep just like my 1M. my 2004 330i ZHP sedan is my DD, winter and summer rain, snow or whatever else mother nature sends her way. The ZHP is such a good DD and I keep it as clean as I can as well, but it's an on going battle with mother nature usually winning. I don't mind getting it a bit sandy, dirty inside and out that's why it's my DD. But I do know an investment car when I see one

This is my mentality with my current 'is and my Z3M coupes.
It's one of the reasons I'm looking so intently on shifting some stuff around and picking up a 1M. It is just too great of a car to leave as a museum piece. |

I recently put quite a few miles on a beautiful GT3 RS 4.0 that had the following sticker on the back window:
Not putting miles on your Porsche is like not having sex with your girlfriend so she'll be more desirable to her next boyfriend I quite liked the quote. 51k miles and counting.

25,000 miles on mine and loved every one of them. I can't believe that it is 3 years old on the 1st of July ! Still waiting on the M2 but it won't be a replacement just a garage mate for the 1M.

Ok - I'll give you an out. One I don't have at the moment. Which is owning a stable of cars, each of which satisfy a different itch. I very much remember going the dealer to check out the e46 ZHP sedans. Loved it. I would still urge you though to put the 1M in the rotation a bit more. Hey,... can I drop mine off at your place for a detail?? BTW mercifully my commute is short. And I've put 19.5k miles on my 1M in the 2.5 yrs I've had it. |

That pretty much describes my used German car buying strategy. Find the garage queen owned by one of the 'anal' owners who spare no expense to store it, maintain it, detail it, etc. But by it 'low' - due to inevitable depreciation. Then, drive it as intended. I really, considered a GT3, and ultimately decided against one - b/c I can't take my boys with me. And threw out the 911, b/c the 1M has side airbags in the rear - seems like a good idea. Anyway - a Pcar is in my future, just don't know exactly when. |

I hear you. In moments of weakness I ration gummy bears 1 at time. Water out of appropriate bottles are defn ok. Essentially rationed and chosen foods are fine in my car. I draw the line though at jelly doughnuts and ice cream

I couldn't agree more. Mine is used every day in all weathers: on my commute, visiting patients at their homes for my job as a rural doctor, at weekends and on holidays across Europe. Now on 47,000 miles and I've enjoyed every one.

Mine is my only car so I drive it everywhere; the ski mountain, lake, work, rain, snow, shine, haha. It's just a car to me. I wouldn't do it any different even if I had a Porsche 911
