E30 m3 road car was only sold because it had to be sold in order for BMW to be able to compete; this m235i racing is the opposite - it's made to get us all hot and ready to buy either an m235i or an m2 if we are lucky enough to get one. BMW has been making racing versions of their cars for race teams and individuals for quite a while; this is the first time I've seen one actively marketed. So I ask myself why, and I'm quite sure they're not planning on selling many of these.
This is the point people make when they call the e30 the only "real" m3, as the rest have been built to sell, not to race. If you look at this m235i and think it's in any way the same as the e30 m3, I think you're falling for the marketing scheme. In any event, the bodywork makes me pumped for what's to come. Maybe the 1m convinced them that there is a market for very aggressive proportions and styling. It's greet that they don't have to compromise since the m3/4 is still the flagship that has to be everything for everyone.

But the marketing folks at BMW M suggested quite another story in the 1M brochure. It's marketing, it's hyping, I know, but the message they wanted to get across was pretty obvious, no ? Excerpt from the 1M Supplementary Owner's manual: "Driving on a race track BMW recommends the following measures before driving on a race track: > Participate in a BMW driver training course > Have the vehicle checked by your BMW center Operation on race tracks results in a higher rate of wear. The BMW 1-Series M Coupe is not designed for use in competitive motor sports. This wear is not covered by the vehicle warranty. The series brake pads and wear indicator are not designed for operation on a race track. Your BMW center will be glad to advise you."

I would put money there will be a M2.
BMW has way too many cars these days and are willing to build anything to try and get more of the market. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 series inside each series is long line up of models plus you have to add the weird stuff like the grand coupe, gran turismo models. then you have the X 1,3,5,6 (maybe 4 too)....I just remember they are bring out a cheap 3 cylinder front wheel drive car too and also the i range ie i3 i8 So what's one more car to the growing list |

One word for this .....Attorneys...... Of course BMW knows most 1M's will end up on track at some point. LOL....they first "recommend" things to do before you go to the race track ...then they say the brakes are not designed for operation on a race track!!??

This is a hell of a deal for a factory race car, and it also seems great news for the upcoming M2.
In the long run I doubt that BMW could have their factory race car built on less than the sportiest model in the range, so I assume this car either already shares much with the M2 or it will in the future. The Porsche GT3 Cup cars for years provided a crucible to both hone reliability and provide upgrade parts to GT3 street cars. This car (which at this price must share much of its DNA with the street cars) seems likely to do the same for the upcoming M2, hopefully offering that car both more track durability and potential factory upgrade parts (like adjustable swaybars and camber, etc) that have up to now been missing from even BMW's sportiest models. While only a small subset of customers care, for those of us that do that's a very good thing. I'm loath to give up my 1M, if this is an indication of the way the M2 is going I might be sorely tempted. Particularly if the diet is successful.

Looks pretty mean! Interesting they picked the performance friction brakes. I always felt they were the best unique application for the E8x/E9x platform.
Can't wait to see what comes out for the F22 platform! |

thus far the M235i just feels like an over-marketed and heavier version of the 135is.... the M235 racing looks pretty sweet though...i hope they use those body panels for the M2. |

Was just looking at the m235i configurator online. Anyone else notice it's listed at 3500 lbs. Wasn't out car at just under 3300lbs? Hard to believe a car with much smaller wheels and tires, smaller brakes, smaller diff and one less turbo can weigh 200 lbs more! Heck the regular 135is is listed at 3375 lbs. They managed to add 130lbs to that. It's a shame BMW keeps going in the wrong direction with weight.

(http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=924217 - http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=915686) We do know that 3373.1 lbs (1530 kg) is the official unladen weight figure quoted for the 'regular' M235i (with optional LSD) (http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...17&postcount=1).

Yah I'm just referring to the street legal m235i. That official unladen weight looks good but either that press release or the BMWUS website is wrong. All the weights I was referring to are from the BMW US site.
The m235i is 3505 lbs with 6 speed and 3535 lbs with auto per bmwusa.com. When compared to the 135is and the 1m the new m235i (street version) is heavy. |

A couple weeks back before the Las Vegas event they said they had no plans to bring to the US at this time. I wonder though if the event was to gauge interest in it. Estimates based on exchage rates say $80/81k for it.
