Cool Upgrade to EURO Air Box

Hey fellas,

I am so on the fence on this topic. I live in Los Angeles - good weather (considerations)

I am not expecting a huge boost in HP/Performance but I do want to be able to rev above 3k before it shifts on A/T in normal driving.

People have suggested I do :

- Euro BMW Air Intake box
- Turner Motorsport N52 Silicone Intake Boot
- Muffler Delete
- Reuse MAF Sensor, should not throw codes to do it, pretty OEM.

More air, intake boot - less restrictive.

I know that it will be mostly a convenience factor to replace the air box for filter replacement, but dropping a K/N filter would be a plus as well I hear.

I WANT :

- Nicer growl from engine bay if any at all - I am ok with no change.
- Nicer sound coming from the back end ( main focus )

If anyone has any suggestions on where I could buy a Euro Air Box, find one, or if anyone has a nice used one as well I can take off your hands. Let me know.

I DO NOT want to:

- Be Loud
- Set off alarms
- Race

I'd pair this with the silicon elbow as well. With the top of the airbox on, you do hear a tiny more grunt but its still super appropriate. You can always grab a screwdriver, remove the airbox top and have a ton of noise too.

There's no harm in trying, but I did that once and the sound was awful. It was louder, but unpleasant. I wish the N52/51 sounded good, but it just doesn't. My old Honda H22 with a short ram intake was the best sounding engine I've ever heard, short of ITB. That's one of the few things I'd change about the 1-series.

Thanks man and all of ya for the feedback. I feel like I do want to pull the trigger on this.

I keep coming back to this option and it sounds right for me.

Did you install a silicone inlet hose when you did this? I think the "resonator" will cause some really funny sounds if the box is left fully open.

That is entirely possible. It might be tuned to cancel out certain frequencies. We'll find out. I ordered the Mishimoto intake hose. If it improves the intake noise, I'll gladly spend $65. I'm running the BMWP intake now with the outlet at the top to direct intake noise towards the cabin.

Airbox doesn't do much on N52.

Upgrading to 3 Stage Manifold + software will net noticeable gains. Headers is the other majorly restrictive point with N52 cars but you'll get some noise with that. I can't speak to how it affects shift points on a 6AT though.

Okay, I can confirm that the silicone hose pretty drastically increases the sound volume at WOT. It sounds pretty good so far. It's not fantastic, but it definitely gives the N52 a throatier growl. The stock intake hose tunes out most of the sound. It's definitely worth $60 to try it our for yourself.

This is, IMO, why people see actual gains. Less turbulence is smoother.

Yesterday I installed the Turner silicone intake boot and the Euro Airbox. I second the other opinions on here: at low revs there's very little difference in the sound so it's comfortable when cruising, but at wide open throttle there's considerably more sound - gives the engine much more presence.

In terms of performance it's noticeably more responsive throughout the rev range. My previous filter was filthy so I don't how much of that is attributable just to the new filter. Whatever the reason, I'm really happy with the new setup.
