Hi Guys,

I thought I would share with you all a very cool beer museum I visited last year. I came across this museum quite by accident. A good friend of mine in the states wanted a German beer umbrella for his patio. He wanted something a little bit different. No Warsteiner or Bittburg would do. No. Some other famous beer brewery was what he wanted.

He exchanged a few emails with this beer brewery near Bamberg in Bayreuth – Maisel Brueder (Maisel Brothers) Brewery. A deal was made and I went to go pick up his umbrella. I also got a great quick little tour of their beer brewery as part of the umbrella deal. Since then I have been back a few more times to see their museum. It is a great look back in time at how beer was made.

I must admit, I never really gave much thought about beer making. Not just what all is involved in making the beer itself but everything else that is needed. Farmers, chemists, logistics, horses and stables, carpenters (for the barrels!), and lots, lots more. I hope my pictures give you a small taste of what is involved.

The museum caretaker Tim, runs the tours. He has a small three man operation. Some days no one show up. And on some days they get a few bus loads of beer tourists. The normal tour runs two hours long. The museum is open Monday thru Sat from 2pm to 5pm. I would suggest to make a reservation before your visit. And of course all tours end up downstairs in the museum’s gift shop. And yes, you do get a free beer on the house! Downstairs is a full American bar from the turn of the 19th century! Very cool.

And… one of the curators makes a special schnapps. They let me taste some. Made from 120 liters of their beer, brewed down and distilled. They take 120 liters of to make just under 4 liters of schnapps! AND… it is so potent that they have to add some water to make it palatable – 88 proof WITH the water added! No joke! I thought it would burn (going down) but it was Ok.

Just for your info… The Bamberg – Bayreuth – Kulmbach is known as the German beer triangle. There are more breweries in this area than anywhere else on earth. It is in the Guinness book or world records. And the Germans have been making beer for a very long time over here. I think since 1400 (in some areas) if I am not mistaken.

This would make a nice outing for someone on European Delivery (ED) over here. Bayreuth is about halfway (2.5 hours) between Munich and Berlin – right off of the A9 Autobahn.

Ok, onto my photos…

Maisel‘s Brauerei

The umbrella! lol

Museum...

Beer King that greets you in the museum’s lobby…

German purity laws and the Brewmeister’s creed/seal – the six pointed star – two triangles.

Each triangle stands for: FIRE + WATER + AIR + EARTH = BEER!

I always was curious bc I had thought (as many do) that this symbol was the star of David. But it is not. It is the Brewers seal – a sign that the beer was made in accordance to Bavarian purities laws. (ie natural ingredients).

Factory power plant from a near by river…

Browning the seeds…

Beer kettles…

Hops…

Making barrels…

Worlds smallest barrel…

The lab…

Beer cooling tower…

Beer storage tanks…

Some classic metal beer signs…

Bottler machine…

Modern day beer keg cutaway…

The glass and mug collection…

Boots…

The King of Beer Mugs!

And then there was this room…

The way things were…

Family tree… the brothers…

The American style bar where your tour ends…

One more look at the old beer factory…

Part of the new beer factory next door…

A small stack of beer cases. I normally see these stacked five pallets high!

PS: and here is a pic of that 4m long umbrella in my old car. lol It was even harder to mail!

Nice as always!!!

One question though. By the time you got to the end of the tour and left, what "state of enebriation" were you in?

Great pics as usual David; thanks for posting!

Sure wish we could get more of these smaller German brewers in the US...

Hi Ian - you might check around with some of the larger beer distributors in your area. A freind of mine back in Va told me he was shocked to see the local BA smoked beer (Schlenkerla) sold in his local beverage store (total beverage).

http://www.schlenkerla.de/rauchbier/beschreibunge.html

In the BA area we have over 200 breweries! Its in the Guiness book of world records as the high concentration of beer breweries in the world - per sq meter/hector. And there are many, many more in the BA - Bayreuth - Kulmbach triangle.

Ah, Dackel, spawn of the devil, first the photos of cars I can't have; now photographs of beer I can't have, not to mention places I can't travel as I'd wish. Next, there'll be photos of cars with beer! Always with the taunts. Is there no end to this madness? ;-)

Any of your Euro 1Addicts want to tour this Beer Museum maybe at the end of May?

Maybe we could put together a little drive thru "Little Swiss" aka Fränkische Schweiz, I know of some hotels in "little Swiss" where we could stay at. And have some nice Spring driving for us Euro 1Addicts.
