HELP!!! Just changed the spark plugs on my 2013 135i...

Just changed the spark plugs on my 2013 135i and I followed the DIY on here to a tee plus the video from youtube. The plugs are OEM from getbmwparts.com and I torque them to spec. I fired it up and the engine is running a bit rough and the SES light came on. Also the exhaust smells different, so bummed out.

You're probably right, OBDII reader gave me error code p305. Damn are they that sensitive? I pulled them out gently like they were the detonator in a nuclear bomb.

Sad to hear you got problems after diy. I successfully changed the spark plug myself a month without hassles and problems and I'm using NGK plug instead of oem. Yes, revert back and double check your work. Good luck

Move that coil and retest. Its probably a bad coil. Also check the connectors at the top of the coil - that it slides onto the terminals correctly. Its easy to get one on wrong.

Also check that you installed the "correct" plugs. N54 vs N55 plugs have different specs. Also this is why I always say to use BMW dealer bought plugs, they will say "BMW Bosch" on them. Aftermarket plugs will just say "Bosch" and have been known to have misfire issues. The plug holes had no oil leaks right ?

Go back and check everything again. Make sure you put the coils back on properly. They can be a tight fit and if they're not plugged onto the plug properly, you can get misfires. Also make sure the wires are plugged onto the coils correctly.

It really is a very simple job. Don't be afraid to DIY. There isn't much that can go wrong. Make sure you have the right tools. You'll need a magnetic BMW spark plug tool. You can get them from Burger Tuning (mine arrived in about 10 days). Also make sure you've got some nice long socket extensions because the rear 2 cylinders have limited access. You'll also need a torque wrench to make sure they're torqued to the right spec.

So I went back and inspected cylinder#5, the coil was not plugged in all the way. It's very tight on #5 due to some cables so very little room to get your whole hand in there. As soon as I saw it I could tell it wasn't in all the way. I plugged it in and as soon as I fired it up and the engine was silky smooth and made all the right sounds. I cleared the codes and took her for a long drive so far everything is smooth and back to normal. I spent a while studying this DIY to avoid stuff like this but I'm happy to say it turned out well for an incompetent mechanic like myself.

Thanks for the input guys!!

Agreed it is simple even for a novice like myself, as long as you have the spark plug socket and the OEM plugs you should be good. Most of the work is taking out the intake system which is all plastic and delicate. The long sock extensions do make a world of difference and are highly recommended. At the end of the day just make sure you take your time and not rush anything, it's just nuts and bolts man nuts and bolts.

That's one thing I noticed when installing my coils and plugs this past weekend... the lever mechanism on the coil only needs a fairly small nudge to unclick which then pushes the plug away from the connector.

Glad it was something simple!!

Nice to know the coils are not easily damaged, some VWs have sensitive coil packs that if you grab them incorrectly, you can pull the wires loose internally, pretty scary!

After normal driving for a day I noticed the throttle a little bit smoother and more power with less input(could be placebo effect). Then I checked my mpg average and it went from 21.5 to 21.9 all in one day!! Might not wait that long to change them out next time.

Plugs are cheap and easy to replace. Glad you got the coil pack issue sorted.
