My first one failed in the same fashion at an Autocross after three years.

The second one seem to have gone a little more quietly but also failed on the first track day for the year for me this year , in its six year.

I feel like I was rather lucky to get 3 years out of each one based on the fact that I run about 7-8 autocrosses and a couple of HPDE every year.

Looks like mine just failed as well

Question - ER charge pipe seems to be the consensus but I am torn on whether I should spend the extra money for forged DV or if the OE DV are fine??

er does seem to be the consensus around here, can't provide any info on the forge dv's but i do have an er with the oem dv's and i am not the biggest fan with how the tubing for the oem dv's fit, maybe with the forge dv's the fit inside the engine bay would be cleaner but the tubing they provide for the oem dv's puts the valves close to the chassis and also the tubing does not slip all the way onto the pipe to inspire a feeling of snug fit and solid clamping. overall it just felt like the oem dv's option was just an afterthought to the er cp configured with aftermarket bov/dv options. that all said i've had the pipe and oem dv's on the car for 2 hard-ass track days and 3 autocross events with no issues whatsoever, and the pipe itself does fit well, sorry if this info just confuses you more, not sure what noise the forge makes but i liked how i couldn't hear the oem dv's, which i think was my deciding factor for sticking with the oem's, hope this helped if even a little

just made my self dizzy looking at options here as well.
I want to keep this similar to stock.

I may get an intake.. a tune.. and at most a downpile in the future.. but really have very little plans to dial up the boost other than a mild tune.

Strongly considering the ER charge pipe.. unsure on the DV....

Also considering an AFE intake - " while in there "

Thanks for the feedback M3 Adjuster & dgwm1!

I ended up going with the OE DV setup for now, as I can always add Forged DVs later if I really wanted to. In keeping with that line of thinking, N54 tuning keeps "Most popular configuration" on hand - so mine will have a meth bung as well. 99% sure I will never use it, but it's an option should I ever go that way.

I'll do a full write up when everything's squared away so artemis can add to issue 5c of his known issues list.

I did the ER CP and "while in there" did the DV from Forge and can say seems to be a very nice piece (I was encouraged by good experience with P&P with their intercooler). I also did the downpipe thing and "mild tune" with stock Cobb map, but may go crazier later. Love the sound and distinct uptick in power. The stock DV seemed to me every bit as crappy as the charge pipe...

I have the ER chargepipe with OEM DV's and my front DV contacts the strut tower. I am protecting the tower with a small square piece of dynomat for now (ghetto, right?) but am seriously considering the AD Engineering CP, which is 3" full length, along with a Tial BOV as long as it won't be too loud. I HATE the sound of a BOV, but understand the Tial is subtle. Can anyone comment on the Tial BOV?

Was searching and searching and turns out the answer was in a thread I already commented on...

I have the same issue with the front DV making contact with the strut tower and on idle it makes a vibrating noise. I have to imagine a lot of n54 users of the ER charge pipe have experienced this issue, so am wondering what the best solution is.

Dynomat seems like a reasonable workaround for right now, thanks for posting that!

I am thinking the 3 series cars have more clearance there, and they did minimal to no research before marketing the same part for the 1 series cars. Locating the bung 1/4" further away would solve the issue. I tried for days to source a curved piece of reinforced silicone hose in the correct size, to no avail.

Just got a call from the dealer and the charge pipe needs to be replace due that is leaking and resulting in boost pressure faults.

Does this pipe is cover by the overall warranty? Part of the turbo?

Dealer just change the fuel pressure and higher sensor.

I really want to sale this car, but I still have like $12K to paid.

Thanks,

You're probably right about this. I was able to dig out a similar clearance issue on the Z4 forums (made banging noise with forge DV contacting strut tower) and the solution was essentially a piece of rubber, IIRC.

If it is your stock charge pipe, and you are still under warranty, it should be covered. It is not part of the turbo, just a plastic pipe from the cold side of the intercooler to the throttle body under the airbox. This is one of the few parts where an aftermarket part is actually more reliable than the original on an otherwise stock car.

Thanks CPO warranty ended last year.

Does this has to be done by the dealer or can I go some where also.
Will the car be safe to dive it for 40 miles to another shop?

Thanks,
Francisco

I am not sure if your warranty will require the dealer to do it, but if so the warranty may also cover transport.

I wonder if using a little blob of Sugru at the point of contact would be sufficient?

I am going to have the forward bung relocated to allow better clearance. It will cost slightly less than replacing with another brand, and I like that the ER pipe uses the OEM style coupling to the TB.

Another one bites the dust ...

Name: IMG_9562.JPG
Views: 841
Size: 88.8 KB

This happened at an event (loud POP sound followed by total loss of boost).

I had brought a spare ER CP that I've been dragging around forever so I got to learn how to install it. I experienced the same issue as Carjunkie with the DV bung closest to FMIC pointing the DV in a way that makes contact with the body of the car. I used the right angle silicone hose on that one but am not fully happy with that orientation either. Might end up trimming the tubing or buying a longer straight connector, or just something.

Added wrinkle is that I believe this technically will cause one to fail CA smog visual but having to spend $ on an inferior piece of OEM stuff is a bit vexing.

I'm in SoCal and had a smog inspection some weeks ago. They looked pretty closely under my hood, and this was just a corner gas station. I had nothing to hide but if I did I would've been concerned.

To quote a New Hampshire license plate, "Live free or die." I don't know why anyone would choose to "live" in Cali.

Agree that sometimes it can be a challenge here with some of the restrictions.

Definitely looking forward to our Fall and Winter seasons though. Cooler weather (has been a very warm summer), plus sunshine and summer tires all year long.

Yes, and I think that if I could live here for the rest of my life I would die a happy man, and hopefully as a result of dying happy, I would "Die Hard" as well. lol

Anyone have experience with the Cobb charge pipe? I've had mine original since 2011, fully stock, and this is the second time the charge pipe has failed. I'm definitely going aftermarket this time, bollocks.

I read that Cobb revised their pipe for better fitment. Not sure if anyone's got any experience with the new one.
