MCShred "Build" Thread

Hey Guys, Im fairly new to the forum but have been quickly putting together my 1er through the help of your posts. My 2010 128i (N51) Space Grey came with the Sport Package, 6-Speed Manual, Black Leather Interior, and Xenons. I have already installed 12mm BMS Spacers all around, CDV Delete, Active Autowerke Exhaust, and AFE Stage 2 CAI. I have Active Autowerke Headers currently getting coated at Swain Tech... I have plans to do an extremely clean build all around. I plan on doing suspension, performance brakes, and wheels ASAP after I get the headers installed and the car all tuned up! Let me know what you guys think

Any goals for the build? Plans for parts - tune? Coilover? Brake pads?

I did order the AA tune with the headers to try out first, I do have access to a dyno and will be posting up the numbers after the install and tune. Still deciding between KW V3's or Ohlins R&T for suspension. I want to do a bigger brake set up but still deciding on what to get

Are you building it for any classes like STX? If not, a BPC tune with the ALFA N option and a set of Valvetronic Rocker arms is a quick way to get extra power. (ALFA N is not legal with STX, nor is the rocker arms)

Any reason why you chose the V3 or R&Ts? I thought the R&T's spring rate was too low, and the V3s have Progressive springs?

Building as a fun summer project at the moment. Could you give me more info about the ALFA N option for the BPC tune and where I could find the Valvetronic Rocker Arms?

I always here nothing but good stuff about the R&Ts. Still have time to decide about suspension, still doing more research. What would you suggest for spirited driving and an occasional track setting?

The suspension "spectrum" is quite huge....usually people start with a budget, do you have one in mind? The fact that you have Ohlins on your list tells me you have decent cash to spend on it. They are good, but many folks here opt to swap the springs out on them for ones that are better suited to the E82 (the Ohlins kit is basically a 3 series kit that fits on E82s).

You should talk to Harold @ HPA, he has a ton of experience and can help walk you through options, and they are a good vendor from everything I've read/heard (I'm not affiliated in any way, have never even bought anything from them).

TC Kline has some nice stuff for these cars also...like I said, tons of options.

Valvetronic lift mod. Good for squeezing that very last bit of performance out.

Also since you're manual, consider the auto diff 3.73 swap (or even a regeared LSD)

Bob@BPC John@BPC Can explain better, but it allows you to run with a iat sensor in place of the maf - simplifies tuning and has the potential for more power depending on intake types.

The valvetronic lift mod just adds more effective lift to the intake cam at 80% throttle or more - but you need a tune. The .5mm increase was good for 8whp - I have the 1MM

And I second the opinion of calling someone experienced on picking a suspension - TCKline, Ground Control, or just talk to Harold at HPA and they will point you in the right direction.

Since I'm doing the AA tune first would it be beneficial to do this now or later on with a BPC tune?

I'd do it later on with BPC. Seems like they know how to handle it.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but were any dyno runs for purely NA made for the valvetronic lift mod? Like stock motor, then motor with the lift/appropriate tune?

AA doesn't have a tune for those. I sent BPC my personal set of the .5mm shims to make a tune from it, then they had a second 1mm set to use (from the supplier) to test on their turbo N52.

Without knowing what to modify, or not tuning it at all, they won't work.

UPDATE: Headers are in place, replaced the water pump and thermostat while underneath the car...The headers sound great but haven't had a chance to drive with it yet...Having some issues with the idle of the car after uploading the tune and resetting the adaptations , it's surging like crazy Plan is to change the oil and put some miles on her and see if anything changes!

As a side note I had some wheels refinished and re-drilled by Jordan over at Sensei6.... insane quality... Cannot wait to get the suspension delt with within the next month or so!

Reset the adaptation again. Also, what are you doing for suspension?

I know originally I was leaning towards the KWs or the Ohlins but I think I'm going to go with the Bilstien PSS10 Coilover with M3 LCA upgrades and Ground Control Camber Plates. Reseting the adaptations right now! Logged about 60~ miles today, very impressed so far with the AA Headers + Tune..
