Were these two 1980’s-era BMWs banned in the USA?

Was just reading an article of banned\blacklisted vehicles in the USA.

Couple Bimmer's listed were listed:

1990 BMW M3 Sport Evolution III

1987 BMW M6

There was a U.S. spec version of the 1987 M6.

Interesting. Any idea what the differences were?

The article did not provide much detail at all.

While European E28 M5's and E24 M6's received the 282bhp M88/2 motor, the US market got a slightly detuned version. Changes include a double-row timing chain, lower compression ratio, tubular exhaust manifolds (non-equal length), and the addition of a catalytic converter to meet emissions standards. Power on the US spec engine was down to 256bhp (from 282) at 6,500rpm but torque was hardly changed, 243lb-ft (from 251) at 4,500. The S38's distinct calling card was the row of individual throttle bodies for each cylinder, instead of one huge one. All M6's were mated exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential (although other E24's were available with an automatic.) M6's in the US (sold between 1987-1989) came with a lot of impressive luxury features standard. The rear seat had it's own dedicated A/C system with separate controls and a drink cooler(!), the front seats were highly bolstered power-adjustable heated units, and a premium stereo was standard.

After 25 years they can be imported so article is false.

The Porsche 959 which could not be brought into the USA even by Bill Gates can now be imported without any issue.

WTF I didn't know they actually made an ///M6 then. I was at a car show yesterday and there was one sitting in red and I thought some dude just slapped an ///M badge on it. I didn't give it any attention.

I got it mixed up with the 8-series smh...

Not to mention EU Spec E24 Motorsport models were M635CSi (M6 badging was unique to North America and Japan).

It's not illegal in the States, just sold under a different official model designation with changes to comply with US safety & emissions regulations, i.e., different bumpers and catalysts on the M1 derived M88/S38 engine.

The E24 M6 (sold in Europe as M635CSi) was part of the original holy trinity (E24 M6, E28 M5, E30 M3) that spawned from the seeds of the M1.
Colloquially, the E24 M6 is affectionately called the "sharknose M6"
Its surprising how underrated the E24 is, even among BMW fans.
