N52 128i - Exxon Valdez impression
Much to my chagrin my, new to me, 2013 128i has decided being oil tight is boring and conventional. Over the past few days and 50 - 150 miles it's decided to spew about 1/4 of the oil content, (according to the readout).
Dripping happily from the undertray, with a mist over the side of the engine cover and front of the inlet manifold. Pools of oil on the casing beneath the inlet manifold and at the front of the head behind the oil filter. I can't see the obvious source, but immediately suspect the OFH. There's a very well reviewed European specialist down the road from me. If it is the housing, anyone with any rough idea of a cost to fix, ($100, $500, $1k...) ? I could possibly do it myself, but I've just started a new job, (after a long period of unemployment, so funds are short), with a long commute. I need the car, so I'm lacking the time / knowledge / skills to be sure of a correct fix. Last edited by StuP; 06-04-2018 at 05:39 PM.. |

If it is the OFHG, it's like $15-25 in parts, and takes an hour or so to complete if you know what you're doing and you have the parts and tools needed. There are lots of good DIY's if you want to save a few bucks, but an indy could also do it for a fairly reasonable price.

Don't drive it with any oil spraying around. If the belt gets wet and weakend it could shred and make a really big problem.

A good indy should be able to find the leak easily. Hope it’s the OFHG, valve cover gasket, or oil pan gasket in that order. I did my OFHG in 40 minutes, VCG in 6 hours, and paid a shop to do the oil pan gasket which is an 8 hour job (all a few months ago). These cars just seem to be reaching that age where the leaks start to show up.

Well, my local specialist shop told me to stop by. He had a look and was convinced the Mitsubishi dealer I bought it from hadn't replaced the O rings when they the changed the oil filter, (claimed to have, at least).
Sprayed everything down with carb cleaner, sold me a new filter & rings. Display reporting 3/4 oil level. Added 1/4 ltr oil. He seemed confident that was the problem. Total bill, ~$25 inc taxes, pretty darned happy, just charged for parts & oil. Time will tell, oil level at 3/4, added another 1/2 ltr since, still at 3/4, but filter housing still dry. |
