E82 Horn Help

Hey guys,

Hoping someone can help me out here...horn isn't working and sussed out pretty much everything. Relay still clicks when pressed, fuses are ok. BMW techs are rubbish...

Thinking of replacing the engine bay wiring harness but can't seem to work out if its even available separately on realoem. Believe its coupled with the fog light wiring on all but the 135i.

Anyone know what the part number is?

I know this is no help... But had a chuckle thinking about it...

You see it on most conformadores in sticker format... Usually right below their favourite tattoo parlour logo and magic happens..

So you are sure the relay is clicking?
When the relay clicks, does the fuse responsible for the horn have power switching to it on/off?
If so, disconnect the connector to the horn and check the same, make sure the constant ground is there, and then check whether a power is switching on when you press the horn pad.
You have to pin point it before you go aboout changing the wiring harness. And I wouldn't buy the whole harness, just make your own wires if it's really the wiring that is faulty.

i was thinking more along the lines of look for pretty girl and horn will return

Just to add to this.... if the relay is clicking like you say, and power is getting to the horn then its horn itself. ..... Upgrade time - La cuckaracha air horns I reckon

Yes I was positive that the relay was clicking. Thanks for raising some questions...went back over the fuses again with a multimeter this time and found that the 15A fuse was dead. Replaced it and the horn is alive again

Horns are shot. just replace them. Happened to mine... BMW had to replace both. They said it is common due to water from washed and stuff.

I have restrained myself many time from writing this.
This is why i don't like to give definite answer on the forum, most of time it's wrong. What if he went ahead and replaced them only to find out it's just the fuse?
There isn't just 1 answer/cause to ANY fault. You can suggest but no definite answer.

My horn sounds sick....I have a 2005 X3....are there 2 horns and one is possibly failing now? Where are they located and how can I replace them? thx.

Can anyone confirm if the horn is actually tied to the foglight wiring? My right front fog took a rock and has a hole in the glass. My horn sounded "sick" the other day and today it doesn't work. It also rained quite hard on a drive yesterday and rained last night. I have a foglight on order.

Peel back the arch liner and make sure the horn trumpet is not wedged against anything as this will alter its sound.

The wiring is usually tied closely together as a bundle with the foglamp etc

Is this the same for vehicles in the US, I have a 135 that recently sounds like it hasn't hit puberty yet and I miss the mature sounding horn compared to the high pitched sound I get now.

135i don't get fog lights due to the oil cooler air duct on the right side. Get an assistant to put their ear near each headlight while you press the horn button. Identify the suspect side then turn the wheel all the way inwards, remove the 8mm screws and peel back the front section of the fender liner to inspect the horn.

Horns can fail in many ways but usually the only solution is to replace the faulty horn. But of course, inspect for interference and wiring issues before replacing.

get a multimeter and take the bumper off and measure if your getting voltage to the horn when someone presses the horn button.

then you will see if you have a fault in the wiring or just a faulty horn
