Do N54 coils get weak over time or completely go out ??

Hi all,

Im trying to track down why my 135i is having part throttle low rpm timing corrections. Full throttle the car pulls fine with 0 knock.

When daily driving in traffic, the car is pulling as much as -9.0 on cylinder 1 and as high as 7.0 on other cylinders. Ive had the walnut shell blasting done and installed NGK 5992s (gapped to .022) and that eliminated misfires and limp mode and the car runs waaaay better. But the part throttle, low rpm, stuff is acting up.

The car has a cobb ap, AFE DCI (open air), and a 3inch catback, fmic, charge pipe w/ HKS BOV, stock downpipes.

It has 82k miles.

Im running cobb ap stage 1 sport ST v401

Im trying to determine if the coil packs are getting weak due to age/mileage or if its something else like injectors.

Any ideas? Do these coil packs get weak over time?

My experience is that the coil packs get progressively weaker, but fail shortly after you start to notice any misfires. The first coil that failed on me would only act up at WOT... which is probably more common as there is less time for the coil to "recharge" before firing. I've also had one fail where it would only act up just above idle. The car would shake like crazy until 1,500 RPMs, then smooth out. That coil died completely within a few hours.

PigFarmer... thank you for the reply.

I was wondering if that was the case. I was thinking that the coils are weak too because as the rpms go up, the voltage may increase or something and thats why it has issues down low. Im probably off on that one...

Any other ideas as to why the timing is being corrected so much at low rpm & light pedal?

Thanks for this. My own situation mirrors what I guess would be the early stages of coil failure. I have misfires on WOT high RPM pulls only. No issues on idle or street driving. I just bought a round of plugs to sort this out, but I guess I'll have to buy the coils too... Where should I get the coils, and are OEM coils good enough for high boost and power? People recommended to use non-OE plugs for high boost, so are coils the same way?

So you guys with coil issues are only having problems up top? My car pulls fine with no knock up top.
