Noisy clutch release bearing 135i
So when my car is in neutral there is a quiet rattling noise... But when the clutch is fully down the noise stops, just wondering if anyone else has this problem and wondered if I should get this problem sorted. Phoned bmw and they said it a common noise with all performance 6speed manuals and there is nothing they can do, just wanted to know other opinions

Pretty sure thats normal throw out bearing noise. Hard to tell without hearing it in person.
I can hear it in my car, but it's pretty quiet. My Evo's was way louder. Edit: Here is a good post for diagnosing problems: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...3&postcount=29 I would still say that it's probably normal unless it is fairly loud. I've never driven a manual that hasn't made a little noise with the clutch out in neutral. Last edited by Stvee; 08-20-2014 at 09:42 AM.. |

My car does this too. Sounds like a bad bearing in the tranny. Putting M3 trans mounts in made it much worse. Apparently this is just what the dual mass flywheel sounds like. Although, I have not had a BMW tech actually listen to it.

In any manual tranny car, if you hold the clutch in a lot , such as at traffic lights, it will ruin the thowout bearing.
If you ask me that sounds like you have a worn bearing. |

When I put my M3 mounts in I also started to hear the rattle. I think it's fine

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion unless it is really loud. As a test you can put the car in neutral, let the clutch out then shut the car off. If you hear a slightly louder version of the noise it is completely normal. Lots of people on here complained about this early on.

I hear the same rattle when I'm in neutral and the clutch engaged. The rattle goes away when I disengage the clutch (pedal pressed down). The noise is louder if I'm in neutral, clutch engaged, and turn off the car. Doesn't happen all the time, just sometime. Glad to hear its normal.
For those that says its a warn throwout bearing. When should one replace it? When the rattle is really loud? |

Same sound feels like it is going to break but shifting and everything else is fine. Steeping on the clutch eliminates the noise. I'll record the sound later

It is never a good idea to sit stopped with your foot on(depressed down) on the clutch pedal. Like MightyMouseTech said it will wear out your thrust bearings and release bearing quicker. When I switch off my engine, I always depress the clutch pedal, so the dual mass flywheel doesn't make all that noise as it stops rotating. Its just part of my routine now. Just as you have to depress the clutch pedal to start to the engine. Dackel
