Firestone Firehawk Indy 500

Finally ditched the stock Bridgestone Potenza's for a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's. I went with the stock size in the front and with a 255 in the rear. Not only do they look aggressive, they seem to stick much better than the stocks. Only concern is obviously if I have a flat or blow-out, but the risk/reward was worth it for me.

I'll post some pictures later.

I picked up a temporary spare tire kit from BavAuto.com.
Not cheap, but I didn't want to commute 48 miles daily without one.

More thoughts please! How do you like them so far? I just took the gamble and ordered these from tire rack as well. I spoke to someone there, and they advised these have the uni-t construction of Bridgestone, and is a newer compound. They described them to me to be like the next gen RE760.

How do you find sidewall stiffness in cornering? Any tram-lining on freeways? Noise? Do they break loose progressively?

Sidewall stiffness is good, I haven't tracked it so I can't comment on how it will be when pushed harder but so far seems good. Drove it on the highway and didn't notice any tramlining, although I was on the highway for a total of 5 miles. Not sure what you mean by breaking loose progressively....but I have a JB4 tune on map 2 and an exhaust and they barely broke loose when getting on it in first and second. I didn't launch it but my old run-flats would have spun through first and second before.

These are brand new models. We plan to test them later on this spring at Tire Rack. I will share my thoughts then.

Been waiting on a replacement for the RE760...

As it turns out, the 760s are the RE001 in the rest of the world. And they're currently up to the RE003.

Well, they just started selling the RE003 here in the U.S., under the name..you guess it!

Firestone FireHawk Indy 500.

And they're DIRTY cheap. SO CHEAP.

If you're buying the 760 now, you're getting ripped off, as the replacement for the replacement of the 760 is being sold here now...

Sorta makes me pissed.

Odds are this info is false.
The Firestones might use the same mold, but I'll bet it's not the same compound. I can't find UTQG to back this though. Common sense says it's not true though, I mean look at the price.

I ordered a set though, 225/255. For the money, I'll take a chance.

I don't think much of the price distinction. The 760 is what, a ten year old tire and accompanying compound, yet still that expensive? There's no justification for that tire still being sold in here, let alone at its current price.

The wear ratings vary between the U.S. and Asia/Europe/Australia though. The RE001 (which is confirmed as the RE760 as far as I can tell) carries a 220 rating, vs. the 340 here in the U.S. for the 760. Likewise, the RE002 and RE003 carry the same 220 rating.

The Indy 500? Yup, the same 340 rating as the RE760 (RE001).

I had firehawks on my first BMW. Was a 1991 318is. They seemed like fine tires on that car.

Pulled the trigger on a set. Predicting a 760-like experience...

From what I am reading these are NOT the same compound... Might as well buy HTRZ III's for $90 a tire if you're happy with these...

What are you reading?

How about a link?

Everything I've read indicates it's simply a rebranded RE003...which makes sense. In fact, people have commented that this information comes form people in the tire industry.

This has the exact same tread wear rating as the 760 here. And the 760 overseas (the RE001) has the same rating as the RE003. You think that's just coincidence?

And more to the point...why should we buy the HTRZ3 over this?

To start, with the current rebate, this tire is cheaper.

Plus, while I like the Sumis (run them currently), they're 10 year old tech. No reason this much newer tire couldn't/shouldn't be better...

You have no point of comparison between these and the HTRZ3, so how can you even begin to make that statement?

Finally got mine on the car, 225/255.

Mind you that I'm replacing a set of thrashed replacement RFT Bridgstones.
Very nice ride. Quiet, no howl on any road surface I found at any speed.
Sidewall is soft vs RFT. Does not feel like a typical low profile tire I'm accustomed to. I wouldn't call it a high performance tire per se. It actually feels kinda lazy.

For a DD that does some brisk straighline, you'll love the tire.
Anyone who enjoys turning, I don't think you'll be happy. It holds a line very well. But it's not a fast responding tire.

Only driven about a hundred miles on them so far. And so far I'm happy enough. The normal law abiding ride is so nice that I can deal with everything else.

6/12/2016 edit

Raining cats & dogs. Tires do just fine in very hard rain and standing water at civil highway speeds.

7/22/2016 edit

Having more time on the tires now I can say that once they break-in they become a very good tire and grip increases (though this could just be driver confidence). And what I thought was a soft tire seems to be more soft suspension. The tire shows no signs of 'rolling' or blistering/feathering edges.
All in all, I'm very pleased for the money.

Yup, sounds like a 760...

It's a daily driving/rough road summer tire for sure.

Upping pressures into the mid 30s (if you haven't already) will help turn in a bit, but sure, it's not, nor meant to be, a hard edge max performance summer.

Just ordered these today in 225/255. Once they are on I will be taking them out to my local twistys. A month and a half from now I will be making a 1000 mile trip on them to the tail of the dragon for four days of fun. Once back from my trip I will update with how the tires did.

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Review

Here is my review of these tires

When looking for tires to replace my stock run flats on my car I wanted to make sure they would handle well in the wet and dry since I would be pushing these tires on mountain roads. I ordered these tires because they were budget friendly and looked like they had great potential. The first time I drove on these tires I took my car out to the local twisty roads known as the twisted sisters out west of San Antonio. The first 100 miles was highway driving and then we got into some high speed turns followed by some low speed hairpin turns. The first part of the day the tires felt unsettled and a little loose but after a few hundred miles they got better. I continued to drive on these tires for the next few weeks to break them in a little more before mile 1000 mile trip to the tail of the dragon.

The 1000 mile trip on these tires was amazing compared to the stock run flats my car originally came with. They were very smooth and quiet and responded very well when trying to dodge giant holes in the Louisiana highways. Once I made it to the dragon I knew I made the right choice in tire. I kept pushing and pushing these tires and not once did they ever let go. The made some noises but never let go. All of the unsettled feeling I got from them back in Texas was gone and they never felt loose again. The turn in feel was very sharp and the extra braking power I got from these tires was amazing. I will defiantly recommend this tire to anyone else who likes spirited driving like I do and I will be buying a set of these for my other car.

Looks as though the 225/255 stagger is not overly wide, so are there any issues with rubbing as with some other 'blockier' tires of the same size?

I have 225/255 on Eibach Pro-kit springs (lowers 1-1.2") and have no rubbing. For the money these are a flaming bargain.
