My stupid fault? Locks!
There's probably a simple answer to this but here goes (I'm probably admitting my stupidity! LOL!)
My car wasn't locked so opened the passenger door and tossed my bag with keys and packages in then proceeded to close the door. I then heard the locks activate. I thought to myself "WTF"! Figuring the keys were in the car I thought I could grab the handle so it would unlock. Nope, nothing happened. Now here's where I was lucky. I had left the window cracked open enough that I could drop a bungee cord and grabbed my bag with the key in it. However, even with key in hand the locks wouldn't open when I grabbed the handle so had to use the remote and pressed the unlock button. Any idea why this happened? |

Any chance something in the bag hit the button? I can't tell you how many times I have pocket locked my cars over the years and sometimes remote started them, just simply doing something like bend over to tie a shoe. I could easily see something in the bag hitting the button especially if you "tossed" a few things in the car.

Do you have comfort access?

Sorry, didn't mention that I have comfort access.
The interesting thing is that there's an X5 law suit regarding this very issue. But don't know why it doesn't apply to other cars. |

My sense from an electronic systems perspective is that there is fault between the systems sensing the key proximity, door closure, and auto lock (depending on ignition/speed/etc.). The auto lock will send a rare, faulty, intermittent command to the system and when both the doors are shut and key is in startup proximity this can create the scenario you described. Otherwise the locking function should not be engaged outside of the coded parameters. Weird glitch.

I just keep my key in my pocket 100% of the time for this reason. I've almost locked my key in the car so many times it's terrifying lol

I'm actually surprised this isn't more of any issue here. The class action suit for X5's is identical to what happens with my car. You leave the key in the car and close the passenger door and car locks on its own. Supposedly it happened to a lady with her kids in the car and they had to break the window to get to the kids. BMW's solution was to pay for the repairs but not admit to any wrong doing.

I doing understand... how is it locking. Don't you have to push a button for it to lock?

Samething happened to me. The keys were in my backpack, dropped the bag on the passenger seat and closed the passenger door when I hear the car locking. It was impossible to get in the car; I called my girlfriend so she brings me the spare keys.
I have confort access and thought I might have touched the portion of the handle that locks the door while closing it. It's weird since I thought the doors wouldn't lock if the keys are inside. Now the keys are always in my pocket... |

This post makes me appreciate a Volvo feature I disliked until a moment ago. My loaded S80 has the equivalent of comfort access. I get out of the car and the girls take what seems like an eternity to get out. In the meantime i am waiting to push the button on the door handle. I cant lock the doors until all four are closed. Ihaven't tried locking the door from outside wth the key inside. But i did notice that i couldnt open a door from outside when the key was inside - anti carjacking setup.
With my stripper 128i, I get out, and as soon as my wife or daughter opens the passenger door I hit the lock button and hear a click while I start walking.
