"new" 328i sedan is QUICK

I have a stock N55 DCT 135i.

On saturday I was driving fast (120mph+) on the highway. A 2015 328i passed my and I have to admit that it was not as easy as I would have expected to catch up. This 2.0T engine is really quick and maybe the CX is better than the 135i...

I'm in a loaner 328, nice car but certainly leaves something to be desired compared to my 135. Seems all the German manufacturers are going with turbo 4's now for their base engines. What is a CX? Couldn't find anything in the googlesphere.....

That's what I was thinking... some kind of tune.

Not a huge difference between these new turbo-4's and the old I6 turbos. Tuning capabilities are hugely different, but BMW juiced up those turbo-4's quite a bit from the factory IMO.

The engines can't handle much more though, they start blowing pistons and rods with little more than a tune.

240hp and 255ft-lbs stock. Dinan offers a tune that takes it to 312hp and 330ft-lbs. Better than a stock 135i. I think I got those numbers right.

Also, the peak HP numbers are only part of the story. The 328s have a ZF 8-speed transmission so with that many gears it can shift frequently and the engine speed is able to spend more time in the range where it produces the maximum amount of power.

thats what I though, it might have a slight tune... if it was 300 hp I wont have catch it so it might just be a small tune (280hp)...

N20/26 is also underrated.. probably makes closer to 270 crank according to all the dynos. With xdrive and the auto, it rolls out hard from a dig for a 4 banger.

"The BMW 335i's turbocharged six-cylinder engine purrs like a contented cat when idling. But in most situations, we found the power advantage of the 335i over the 328i to be negligible."

I have a 328i as well with Dinan stage 1. I think my 135i is faster stock than my 328i with Dinan but it's real close. Low end torque might be more on the 328i though. I have my 135i flashed with Stage 1 MHD though so it destroys my 328i.

Your 135 is too slow

As mentioned above, if they had a JB4 on their car, race would be very close against a stock N55

I had a 2016 328i xdrive loaner recently. It did feel pretty fast and had some nice features that my 135i doesn't have but I was happy to get the 1er back at the end of the day. Totally different animals.

If you are an enthusiast driver, the sort of driver that BMW used to build vehicles for, this is the point.

There is no shortage of new vehicles out there, with automatic transmissions, that are luxurious and have lots of power and fast acceleration. Virtually all of them now also have electric steering with hardly any, if any, road feel. If you want luxury appointments you can easily get those, too.

If, however, what you want is what BMW used to build, responsive cars with road feel that are genuinely fun to drive, your new car choices are unfortunately very limited.

Power and acceleration are not that rare anymore, even in some very pedestrian brands. There is only so much you can do with raw power on public roads, unless your intention is to track the car or risk getting a lot of tickets.

I came from tuned Audi's so powerful 4 cyls. aren't anything new to me. I am glad that the stock power output from these recent 2.0T's is finally where the tuned ones were 10 years ago. My GF got a loaner C 300 from the MB dealer a couple weeks ago. I turned on all the sport settings in it (it was the full adaptive packaged one) and that SOB was an angry, angry car. I enjoyed it, not gonna lie.
